Me too. I've been sober 3 years now and totally unable to make a single friend in that time. But I'd rather be lonely while I figure out how to do it sober than be dependant on alcohol any more. Plus I don't make a fool of myself nearly as much now.

I too have a hard time determining if someone reciprocally feels a friendship with me.

Socialising whilst sober can be one of the most terrifying, vulnerable feeling experiences... 8O
Sometimes the sense of feeling vulnerable however doesn't stop me.

It can take me around six months to finally accept someone as a real friend to me and not someone who just goes to me to talk if they're bored or I'm the last person available.

Of course, I have been betrayed from time to time, but I don't let those moments pull me down. As the famous saying goes, "You never understand how valuable something is until you've lost it".

As for how I "tell" if someone likes me as a friend back, well, I honestly can never be 100% sure. But I do run a few tests to see if they're willing to like me beyond my interests, occupation, and my mistakes. I also give my care and love out to whomever I'm new with while I wait to see if they give that love back. If all goes according to this plan, then I feel I've made a friend.

Has anybody ever felt like you don't have any friends when you technically do? I do that all the time... and I don't know why it happens...but it sucks...

Like feeling suspicious of people, as Cordelia described? I do that too, but I keep it all in my mind. It does suck, but when you meet a person who has no reason to hang around you other than to be your friend, then it feels good :)

When someone is talking to me for no good reason I'm usually wondering why they would have a reason to talk to me and would generally feel suspicious.

I don't have any friends anymore, i did in Barrie, i had 4 and a few on and off. I'm not sure if i was still even friends with them last year, i guess not because i never saw them and kind of pushed them away the year before for no reason but they weren't really the best friends anyway. Now all I have are the few people in my english class that I have nothing in common with other than sitting in the same general area, I'm pretty sure they just want to know me so i'll give them answers because they're too busy talking about what hairy arms they have :?

I have friends, but I hate them... they probably hate me... and when the "cool" group tried to make friends with me ages ago, I screwed it up, lulz

I've been there too. I know what it feels like. Read some of the replies that I've written in other threads today.
