Socializing online is a bit easier than in person because you have a bit more time to respond. That's how it seems to me, anyways...

i'm finding that to be so true...though i do find it easier sending pm's rather than im's because they don't require immediate response...and almost anything is easier than in person...

i do not tend to have the same experience, when im with people i have some sense of urgency about what im going to say and thus with the preasure i sometimes just blurt out things, just to answer so to speak .. but online i can do some patternised responses but i dont know if i really would count that as genuine comminication. and forums im totally lost never answer posts even though i would like to ... anyone have some good tips on "getting to it" and to the actual point of pressing the post button ..

(i have not even read what i wrote, if i did i probably wouldnt post it)

Does anyone feel like that, more confortable reading than writing, even when sometimes you have the itch of replying or starting a thread?

As in real life, I always have to force myself to post or to talk - even here in WP, where I should not be ashamed of my inability to share or show. I have not even bothered to find an avatar and don't get me wrong, this site means a lot to me!

People say it is easy to know people and even date on the internet - but how?

don't lurk that is lame, and get an avitar, it's better, just start typing after your 10 or so posts your be posting like a trooper

Sometimes posts are interesting to read, but does not mean I have anything meaningful to contribute. Other times I feel it is not my place to respond because I do not have first hand knowledge of how it feels to grow up AS in an NT world.

I also type all my responses in Word and copy and paste. I am a horrific speller and typer, and would be embarrassed if anyone here thought I was dumb because I lack these skills. Plus it gives me time to re-read in case I said something in a way that was not clear.

Post, no one bites, unless you ask…

I have been on many boards, but mostly lurked on them. can go months, or even years, reading them every day, but never posting. Maybe like a version of stage fright? but I have been forcing myself to post on this one.
I think I have found a home. or at least ad close as I can hope to find.

You're not alone :)

I've noticed a pattern in my internet life - I lurk on a board for a while, get to like it, join and start posting, but then begin to feel like I don't fit in as I thought I would, so go back to lurking. I'm in the penultimate phase with WP at present and am making myself post so I don't slip back into easy lurkerdom.

Don't worry about being offensive, just be yourself. Even if people disagree with what you say, its only gonna help you learn more about yourself and life.

I have a tendency to lurk more than post, I usually follow the old Buddhist phrase "Does it improve on silence?"

I did not start posting until almost two years after I became a member here.

As someone who lurks more than he actively participates in conversations here, I feel it best I state my own reasons:

I haven't been a member of Wrong Planet for very long, but I do tend to only ever feel like posting when I encounter a topic to which I feel I can contribute. Even then - when I find such a topic - I usually spend far too long figuring out what I want to write as my reply. I am very self-conscious about my writing.

Also, I often feel very insignificant. Many of the people who post here seem far more interesting than I am, or ever will be. I don't have a particularly active life, and I don't have much to be proud of right now. :(

Surprisingly, I find "real-life" conversation easier than posting on messageboards, provided I find the right company. Still, I have yet to make any real friends. :?

I do this on all the forums I visit.. Half the time, when I start typing in a response to a thread I stop and think "Eh, I sound stupid, forget it" and just lurk instead.

Not to mention - when I do post it seems like I just end up killing the thread a lot of times (or there won't be any responses for a while) or something
