Is it just me, or is NYC about the worst place in the universe to live for an Aspie who hates noise and crowds?

I think the second part of that is the important part. If noise and crowds are what bother you, sure. If you have more of a social anxiety that makes you hate small groups, than no. In smaller (suburban) communities, everyone knows everyone else. Talks about everyone else. So if you do anything perceived as weird or inappropriate (my specialty) it will follow you around for ages.

If you hate noises and crowds, sure, the city might not be so fun. But I find a certain safety in a crowded environment. Nobody is staring at me, at least not on the street. If it's full of noises, any noise I could make don't matter so much.

I'd have to agree with both of you....which is the main reason that, despite HATING New York and the overstimulation it provides, I am still here after 18 years. It's a whole hell of a lot better than living in a town like the one I grew up in, population 500, where if you're a weirdo from a weird family like I am, you're freakin INFAMOUS before you're even old enough to know why.

Sidenote....recently moved from Manhattan to a nearby suburb, for a few reasons, one of which was to escape the relentless noise and herds of people. It's way more peaceful, but worse even than the length of my daily commute to work, is the way people here, despite there being more of them than there were in my home town, are in everyone else's business, CONSTANTLY. I've been here less than a year, talk to only a select few people, but am apparently famous again....and not even for being the weird little autistic prodigy, like when I was a kid....they don't know enough about me. They 'know' me and comment daily based solely on what I look like and the way I dress. I was NEVER this uncomfortable walking around in the city!

Exactly.

In a dense urban environment there are so many people, nobody has the time or energy to judge everyone around them. So many people are "strange" that anyone who cared about every strange person would have no time to do anything else.

Born in New York city, but not currently living there.

I like the city. I have had issues with noise, etc in other places, but in New York, once I hit a certain number of people (100-200+), they all become background noise. Besides, I don't really know anything else; I've only lived in New York, London, and Hong Kong. Well, I've spent summers in a smaller community, but I rarely left the house, so it probably wouldn't count.
