Dr. Wendy Lawson
PhD MAPS
Dr. Wendy Lawson PhD MAPS is a researcher, psychologist, writer and poet and has operated her own private practice for many years. Wendy was originally diagnosed as being intellectually disabled, then in her teens as being schizophrenic, and finally in 1994, Wendy was diagnosed as being on the autism spectrum.
Wendy was awarded fourth place as ‘Victorian Australian of the year’ in 2008. Also the mother of four children, two of Wendy’s sons are also on the autistic spectrum. Wendy is passionate about the rights of those who so often cannot speak for themselves and aims to promote justice and equality for all.
The Centre for Autism Spectrum Disorder is a multidisciplinary research facility dedicated to assisting people on the autism spectrum and their families. This research centre was initiated as a result of substantial need for specialised services in the Gold Coast autism community. All clinical treatment services to be offered in the centre have been designed from consultation with autism-specific clinicians and researchers, families, people with an ASD, and a range of service providers.
In addition to offering evidence-based services to people with an autism disorder, this research centre also aims to provide support for family members and training for professionals working with ASD people in the education and mental health fields.
