Wish I could say something helpful but unfortunately, I'm in the same boat too. The only true close friend I've ever had is my boyfriend 
Only one other person has been there for me in the same way, but we lost touch and she lives in another country.
So far I'm looking for friends on places like tumblr and OkCupid but with little success. I guess I give off a vibe that puts people off *shrugs*
Weak attempt at advice: maybe try looking on forums relevant to your interests?

Possibly. There are a few people here I think would make a good friend but I'm reluctant.
I'm told it generally takes a few tries to find someone you can have a deep connection with. Perhaps I should get to PMing and see which ones pan out?
I think that's a pretty good idea
