I've never copied a fictional character, but I've watched a friend of mine socialize with people and get further than I ever could, so I try to emulate that.
Perfect example.. I needed to have a motorcycle engine crated and shipped. I called a shipping company, and the guy I spoke to said they only handle the shipping--they don't do crating, and couldn't help me at all. Instead of saying "thanks anyway, bye" and hanging up like I normally would, I decided to try making small talk. I brought up how difficult it is to ship large items like that, a little bit about motorcycles, etc. After a few minutes of what I considered to be pointless chit-chat, the guy mentioned that he DID know of a nearby crating company. Not only that, but they regularly visit the shipping company to crate things up for them!
I was partly relieved and impressed that it worked, and partly pissed off and confused as to why I had to engage in small talk in order to get a helpful, honest answer.
I brought that up to the more social friend of mine, who serves as my interpreter for figuring out normal people. He said "Well yeah, that's the human element.. People aren't robots or computer programs. Being friendly and explaining your situation made him feel sympathetic and more willing to help, instead of just asking a question out of nowhere." I suppose I understand that, and it definitely works, but it still annoys me nonetheless.
