Wow- there is a fantastic number of SE Qld'ers here and I never knew.

I'm not aspie- my husband is. He's lived most of his life in Brisbane- though we have ben in Toowoomba for the past few months for his work- and are about to move again to the gold coast.

Are there support groups for aspies in Brisbane?

I'm struggling a bit lately. :/

hi Brundisium, i am on the south side of brisbane. i have not attended any group meets as such, but i have managed to catch up with syzygyish and mysassyself :thumleft:

if you want to catch up; go for a coffee, sandwich, beer + burger, or whatever... shoot me a PM.

i can find social situations with new people difficult, so you will have to excuse some apparent (though harmless) weirdness. haha

Perhaps the four of us could meet up?

I feel a lot more comfortable when there's more people around, I don't have to come up with so much to say.

It's nice to meet people who are as uncomfortable as I am, it makes me feel more comfortable with myself, which is odd, but good!

that sounds good, Brundisium. syzygyish and i both have transport; syzygyish is on the gold coast, and mysassyself is in northern nsw... and i think she is having car problems at the moment(?) and is also starting university.

i am fairly flexible for weekends, but not available during the week... with that in mind, if you can nominate a time and place on a weekend (somewhere relatively central) and run it past the others i am happy to work with your plans... as long as i have a little notice. :thumleft:

Hi everyone! :D

Sorry I haven't replied to everybody that has replied here, as quickly as I would have wished. I have this little problem with complexity that overlaps
with my social life and my presence on WP that sometimes coincides
with Tsunamis of interaction and great Troughs of silence.

I think (and forgive me if I am wrong on this one)
that this thread has been plagued by hesitation and procrastination for too long!

Let's make a definite collaboration of willing and able Aspy bodies
available for a connection of probably protesting and hesitant minds.

Let us say : This Sunday, at one pm, at a location we all agree upon.

I am going to hesitatingly suggest Mt Cootha Botanic Gardens,
because I know it is free and because I have been there before.

(Brisbane is a REALLY confusing place to drive around in! :x )

Anyway, pm me about your thoughts and suggestions.
(Or even better, post them up here straight away!)

... I saw a post once about a meeting between two aspies,
I can't find it right now so allow me to paraphrase :

I had no fear at all after the introductions were over,
gentle and articulate in our explanations,
we were patient and considerate with our replies.
It was as if a mirror was placed between us,
No nuance or lie was perceived as reprise.

(sorry, broke into poetry for a bit there! )
(it doesn't happen in real life )

I'd be interested in a Sunday meet-up. I think there is a little cafe at the Botanical Gardens... otherwise we could just walk around. One of my interests is photography, so it's a good little place for me.

My husband is also aspie, so that makes 3 interested aspies.

I agree, theirs a disproportionally high number of Aspies here on on WP living in sparsely populated areas eg quite a large number of Scandinavians as well, which is surprising.

:D :D :D
Thank-you Bella1, I would like to gratefully confirm your acceptance of my invitation.
Is this Sunday still alright ?
I hear that it's still going to be bucketing down. :(

Is there anything that you'd like to share with us about yourself before the meet-up ?
Just your interests I mean.

I think I said way to much about myself on the first or second page,
but it stands there in perpetuity for your perusal.

Is your husband on WP?
I think it's SO COOL that two Aspies have found each other ! :)

Photography is one of those things on my 'Wish List' of obsessions that I never seem to get around to following through on. :x :(
Here's a photo of a Water Dragon that I took at the restaurant at Mt Cootha :
Image
They're so used to people they wait under the tables for scraps!
:D

And here's one of the photos tektek took of me when we had our meet-up,
(I accidentally had this macro lense on that I had just bought,
and he had to walk backwards and forwards to position me correctly,
so the bad framing is my fault ! )
(I wore my Wrong Planet T-shirt especially for the occasion! :D )

Now there are three,
do any other Aspies want to come along ?

*Nudge, nudge, , ,
Go on, you know you want to! *

We have to meet So many people we don't want to,
here's an opportunity to make a decision and get out of your comfort zone
and dip your toe in a Brand New Pond of your own free will !

I confess, I have already had a minor bout of insecurity about this,
i.e. - It could have been another beautiful Sunday alone
with just my own OCD demands to go through at my own pace.
But, I am really going to try to get to this one on time!
 - I'll probably be late.

I went to the Soundwave festival at RNA.

I didn't notice anybody making my aspie radar beep, but I'm sure there would have been some aspies present there (assuming they'd be able to tolerate such a place; thousands and thousand of people jammed into RNA like sardines, and noise too, lots of noise!).

I've actually been to quite a few concerts in my time.
Dragged along by well intentioned people that thought they could get me 'out of my shell' or wanted to 'share the experience' of their favourite band with me.

That was Way back, before you were born b_b.

I do remember the horrendous noise, but mostly I remember
the girls
and the girlfriends and boyfriends
kissing and cuddling and holding hands
and doing other unmentionable things in public
and the groups of party people I wasn't part of and
desperately, desperately wanting to be In That Party
but at the same time being horrified and disgusted
by their blatant...(a lot of words have gone through my head, trying to think of the one word that will present my case ; irreverence, camaraderie, ignorance, rebelliousness, impropriety, extroversion...etc, the list grows long !)

I think I will settle on 'narcissistic self-indulgence'
Just because it's got this nice 'ring' to it !

Hi syzygyish. Pity about the rain. Do you know if the cafe is usually open on Sundays? I've only been there once. I don't think there are any other undercover areas around there.... Maybe there is another cafe/restaurant in the area?

My interests are writing (both non-fiction and fiction), reading, photography, occasionally dodgy little internet games or websites and I love to think and talk about the world, people in it and various subjects to do with people interaction, different cultures etc. My husband and I often sit and talk about theories on how people think and aspie/NT interactions. The other day we were talking about neuroplasticity (a brain rewiring theory).

My husband is a member of WP, but he doesn't come on very often. We met on a little chat site, talked a few times, then found ourselves doing nothing on New Years Day, so decided to meet up to watch Bowling for Columbine. It was an odd little meeting. I remember my husband was really quiet, until I decided to talk about Astroboy (a cartoon from the eighties) and then he opened up. We became good friends and after about a month, more.

Hopefully, we can entice a few more people to come along. I've spoken to both tektek and Brundisium through PM, so hopefully they can make it too. If not, it would also be cool to just meet syzygyish. You seem interesting. I've never seen axe murderers look so cheerful and friendly, but then again I've never met any, so maybe there are some that giggle while they chase people around swinging their axe wildly. I suppose it could be considered fun. *grins* Just a reference to tektek's earlier post about you not being one.

Oh, here's a picture of my husband and I. It was taken back in 2003.

Hi Bella1, I am tempted to quote you and go through your points one by one,
but i am not going to because, been there done that.
Instead I am just going to arbitrarily point out picks of interest :

(Just laughing at this :

Muahahahahaha!
I've got you all fooled!

OK , I am just joking... serious Aspies, settle down! :P

To be serious,
I have not spoken to tektek since his last pm.
The gist of our conversation was "I am going through chaos"
:(
So, I didn't want to bug him with my little adendums and ad infinitums,
but, hopefully, Adam has survived !
:D
It would be really cool if I could meet you again !
I am rooting for you, buddy,
In a purely philosophical sense!

OOh! I love this image so much! :D
You are jumping up and down with excitement,
luckily, there's an aspy there to steady you in case you fall down backwards
and crack your brains out! (Yes, that's what we think about! :( )
(His arm around your back is the most important thing in this picture)
And you have your hand around his head,
so he will remember that catching you is his Most Important Job!
(also so, if you go down you take him with you!
  )

Also, it will be awesome if Brundisium comes along!
8)
And amazing if some of the people that have posted once sign up! 8O

Three sleeps to go before this conglomeration of social misfits
gets together and tries to walk over the tightrope of talk...

The other day we were talking about neuroplasticity (a brain rewiring theory).

Well I've just about recovered from (or suffered) horrendously form brain plasticity. Even after after a miss diagnosis's by Dr's acquired brain injury ( 33 long years ago ) further agitated by a severe lobe injury (work related) as a cycle courier, it was able to heal itself thanks to intensive psychotherapy, and Testosterone. So yes the brain can heal itself from a life time of trauma. And it's almost all gone severe depression, severe anxiety, sensory issues, ocd, seizures ,etc etc.

Neuro , neuron

Plasticity changeable, malleable, modifiable.

www.amazon.com/Brain-That-Changes-Itself-

According to my GP many Dr's do not believe in Neuroplasticity 8O

Hi Bella,

Still happening Sunday?

I am feeling horrible at the moment and I HATE to be flakey, but if it is cool with everyone, I will see how I feel on the day.
I wasn't going to come, but I may be feeling better by Sunday.

My real name is Michah, I am blonde and about 175cm tall.......just so you guys know.

Thanks and hopefully see you then.
