I'm actually one of only 2 Aspies I know who can drive. I can, but can't stand it....it makes me nervous, deprives me of exercise, and worst of all, other drivers drive me CRAZY!

The other Aspie I know who drives actually LOVES to....I don't understand him at all. :?

It took me until I was 26 to get my license. Only because my partner wouldn't let up about it. I tended to have panic attacks when I tried to drive. I was terrified of it. Fortunately I lived in Chicago and biked or took public trans everywhere.
I didn't start to drive on a regular basis until I moved to Tennessee when I was 30. I just got through it somehow - there was no other way for me to get around.
I'm 42 and I've been driving with no difficulties since then.

I've been driving since I was 16. My parents were hesitant to let me drive because they were afraid of my bad temper and AS. I've never had an accident, even though I learned to drive in Dallas with an SUV, which is one of the most dangerous cities in the nation to drive in. Their worries were unfounded.

I have gotten one ticket so far, and I didn't do anything wrong when I got it. I will likely eventually get others because I have to drive a lot in rural areas of Texas. Any horror stories you hear about how the pigs who patrol the highways in Texas are douchebags are true. I get pulled over all the time for not doing anything, but I have only had one give me a ticket. Thinking about what that ticket did to my insurance still makes me mad.

i'm sure there's something you could install to stop getting a ticket, cameras in cartain parts of the car, cruise control etc... or you could try an excuse: excuses for the police

it might work ;)

I think Austin has surpassed Dallas.

I am an aspie and I drive. I spent 10 years in pizza delivery. I have also delivered part( requiring pick up trucks) and tires( 24' box trucks) as well as working for a company called Renzenberger's ( we transported train crews around the train yard and to hotels, etc...) I currently drive a 1996 Honda Civic.

I failed the driving test once because I was so nervous that I almost peed myself. I haven't had the motivation or time to retake the test (of course it doesn't help that your parents have little faith in your driving skills because you happen to be an Aspie.)

So here I am at the age of 22 with no license. But I plan on changing that.

Remember, just because it takes you longer to get a license doesn't mean you are unable to drive.

I don't think you understand how bad the cops are here. In rural Texas you can get pulled over for doing nothing, it happened to me, I wasn't speeding any time I've been pulled over, and I know many other people it's happened to. Most of the time I get lucky because it is a state trooper on a power trip who is harassing me because I am young and therefore an easy target. My ticket happened when a small town pig had the audacity to write tickets out of his jurisdiction on a freeway. The court date was set in some dipshit little town that makes money by writing tickets, meaning I had no chance of appealing the ticket successfully no matter what. This is common in rural Texas.

i would sugest being non complient but if they're anything like what you're describing them as chances are bullets may start flying, same as if you were to ignore them or drive off. i have heard of someone going a few miles over the speed limit who didn't realise and when the police tried pulling them over their excuse was that they believed it was someone else, if you're maintaining a legal speed and an officer tries pulling you over just eep on going until you get a witness either in range or on the same stretch of road.
if you don't think it would work go with your gut, i''m just contemplating what i might do in the same situation but i don't want to risk putting you in danger.

I have been driving since I got my license when I turned 16 years ago. My main issue is this---I can get into someplace like a big shopping mall that I am not familiar with, but I have trouble getting out and back on the main road. My wife helps me with that.

They tend to do this on very empty roads, and there are a lot of those in Texas. That way they can get away with it more easily. Although having a witness wouldn't help one bit in some courts. It's also not worth killing them because the odds of getting away with it aren't very good even though there would likely be no witnesses. The whole thing is a big screw job. I just try to avoid driving away from big towns as much as I can.

Thank you for this topic. Seems that most of us can drive. Ugh. Here's my deal. I can't, and at this time I won't. I don't know what the heck is wrong with me but I had always had fears and inhibitions about driving. Then the few times I have had family members take me out for practice I have had full on panic attacks! My heart races and my brain completely freezes. I am incapable of coherent thought or focus! That is not safe driving behavior. I have broken down and sobbed out of sheer terror and panic. My brother helped me with this big white hippie van of his on some dirt roads and i was able to work up to 40 mph without panicking, so long as i was not around other cars. I panic still in traffic. and when i go above a certain speed, i feel like the car will careen out of my control. it always seems to want to go to one side of the road or the other anyway. I cant see where the car is on the road and i go to the side of the road really easily. I know no one else can either, how the hell do you guys know how to keep the freagin car in the middle of the lines???! !! ! GRrr. I have too many other fears too. What if my reflexes arent fast enough in situations that require it? I'm naturally slow and clumsy with my movements, literally incapbale of going above a certain speed, I wander off too much in my mind and it really is beyond my control. I would be one of the most careful driveers out there, but there are many careless drivers that depend too much on the driving ability of others when they pull the stupid crap i see them pull on the road. I don't know I'm on a tangent here. It really is awful though. I actually want to drive. I really do!

When I was a teen at high school (freshman, last year of my three years of hell), I often see teenagers driving their own cars. However once I became self-aware of the over dependence of cars in American society I decided not to own a car. Other reasons include the fact that my mom complains about people speeding and driving dangerously, not to mention story after story of drunk drivers, even if you're not driving drunk you may be a victim of drunk driving by a drunk driver.

Even though my dad keeps asking me, when are you going to start learning to drive, I keep telling him "What's the point?". I currently live in a area of accessible public transport (Metrorail, ShuttleUM, Metrobus), so what's the point?

If I graduate from the University of Maryland and get a job, I'll move to an area only if it has accessible and real public transport. The only way I'll drive is either behind a video game or by gunpoint.

I got my driver's license on my first try. I am able to drive safely, I just dislike driving, mainly because I cannot concentrate on more than one thing on the road besides where I'm going. Most people my age enjoy cruising around while I'd rather just stay home and play video games or browse the internet.
