Hardly anyone talks to me on there and I don't have any people I know in real life on my friends list, either. Plus, most of them seem to have better and exciting lives than me.

I have an FB account because someone on another forum (of whom I am quite fond) convinced me to join. But I hardly use Facebook at all simply because I don't know what to say on it. And like you say, roygerdodger, I find I don't have a lot of exciting stuff to share in Facebook messages. Online, I personally prefer message boards to networking sites... those give me more time to think of a good reply, everyone isn't always expecting me to respond immediately, and there's more room for replies of substance.

I just experience Facebook as being too casual and transitory for my tastes.

Remember, what you see of people's lives on Facebook is what they want you to see. It's called 'internet truth'. But I agree, it still sucks as a feeling.

I don't think you need to close it. If it's boring, just don't use it and spend your time on more interesting sites.

It's only as boring as you make it.

Tips...

Decide upon your special interests (eg: Star Wars, certain Authors, Musical tastes etc) and join "PAGES" or "GROUPS" associated with them. Respond on their discussion boards and post new topics and new items/links.

Join some aspergers groups - there's a few there and the people in them are very nice.

Screen your friends but accept people you don't actually know based on their interests (when they've added you, you can check out their profile before you accept... look for signs that they are aspies or that they have similar interests).

Play Games on there, if that's your style.

Get Sharoholic and add it to your browser. When you find an interesting or just "funny" page, add it to your post.

If you're OCD or a collector, add some collector/reviewer apps, like WeRead (books) or Movies on Facebook.

You'll become more interesting... and more people will find things that they like in your interests and talk to you.

If you just sit there and do nothing... then nothing will happen.
