Whenever someone says something about me, I don't waste time to find out what and who. Whenever they make a 'joke' up about me, I get really pissed. And that is mostly the cause of the joke being ruined... I just can't take anything.

I've come to the conclution that my autistic part makes me not to be able of "sit back relax and enjoy". Now a days I try to do it,goes better everytime specially after I realized that autistic people is not able to understand certain jokes and sarcasm. So now I just laugh about everything even if I don't undertand.

To a degree, I think it is in our nature. Kids, though, can be VERY mean and can make cutting remarks just because they are insecure or because "everybody is doing it". You might find that the jokes get much better as you get older. You're at a tough spot right now where some kids are growing up and others are still stuck on making fun of people. Try to hang in there! :thumleft:

My boss is in his 50's and he makes cruel jokes that I never received even in school...

People like him are the reason I hate to go near anyone.

I take everything seriously. Mind you, I tend not to get angry at the "jokes" that people say to me, I just do not laugh at these supposed "jokes."

Unless, of course, the joker says, "It's a joke." Then I will muster up a weak chuckle to satisfy that particular person.

But most of the time, I just analyze their words and come to the conclusion that they are just speaking pointless nonsense like they always do.

This is mainly because we take things a bit too literally often, i learnt the hard way as well that people will exploit this. Ah well, it's just something you have to watch out for.

If it is something that should be taken seriously, I dont. If it is something light hearted, in jest, sarcastic, meant to be humorous, i take it seriously.

When I was a kid I couldn't spot a joke. Now I generally can but will still sort of take it seriously on the inside.

I take many jokes seriously. People think this is funny and make up stories and I always believe them. I do not feel they do it maliciously though at all as they are good friends and the jokes are never mean - so I never get offended. They can be things like: my diving buddy convinced me that the swans at the beach where we were going to dive were vicious and I had to stay away - they were not really! Another time I was on a boat and the captain yelled "everyone has thirty seconds to be off the boat" so I jumped over the side into the ocean. Everyone was shocked as they all knew it was a joke but I did not. I think it is very funny in hindsight and I understand that the captain did not mean for anyone to jump over the side. Those are the kind of things I fall for

Thanks for this thead and the feeling Im not alone with taking everything seriously.
I always do. If someone outside my family is joking with me Im getting very offended as Im thinking "how dare you to joke with someone you dont know and who you can be so sure will undertand that you joke - which I dont" But people rarely try to joke with me as I give a serious impression from the beginning...and I dont joke myself because Im so busy to get a grip on the social situation and actually wants it to stay serious...

Me and my family are so serious. My parents use to joke with me sometimes but I rarely understand that they do it. My mum can tell me a joke without laughing and its always unexpected as we used to have serious talkings with each other. Her jokes is mild though. My dad use to joke with me in a cruel and provoking way. Because he knows Im taking everything litteraly he likes to joke with me to see my reaction. I hate when he do that because its very stressing to me but he think its entertaining :(

My husbands family is much much easier to deal with when it comes to joking. They are naturally funny and jokes very often. Lucky me I can understand their kind of jokes and can join in and do the same with them as well. Me and my husband can joke in a way I cant do with anyone else.

I'm the same. I'm better at spotting jokes than I used to be but it's still quite hard for me.

I try not to take things seriously because I've learned that it's not worth my mental health to do that, but it's in my nature, so I struggle with it.

The problem is that when someone says they are joking, how are you supposed to know that for real? You can assassinate a person's reputation by "jokes." At what point do you cross that line from it being fun and games to being destructive?

It's like complementing a woman on her appearance being taken as sexual harassment. How does one know when a sincere complement will be interpreted as unwanted sexual advances?

I seem to be totally opposite of most people here, I have a hard time taking anything seriously and can't tell when my joking/teasing is going too far so I always end up accidentally offending people. which is weird, cause my jokes are never mean-spirited.

I'd probably offend the bunch of you quite easily, probably shouldn't ever attend any wp meetups :P

I do take stuff seriously a lot.

This reminds me of last week at book club when the teacher said she didn't have the book cos she was "mugged", and she meant that someone else had borrowed the book from her, but I, and one other person, took it literally and thought she was actually mugged. Then she explained for our benefit that she'd been speaking metaphorically/joking, LOL.

2nd that, well it varies. but my 1st reaction is nearly always to see the potential humor in something
