So far I've met one on here, kaitlyn_loves_music, and we've become really good friends ever since. But I'd like to know that there are other people out there like me. You see, although I'm an Aspie, I can't stand a lot of the things that "typical" Aspies seem to like. For instance, I don't like video games, I don't like sci-fi, I don't like fantasy (i.e. Lord of the Rings), I don't like anime or manga, I don't like role playing games, and I'm by no means a techie. Instead, I like alternative and indie rock (although usually the "mellower" side of it), I like poetry, I like indie movies like "Juno", "Garden State", "Harold And Maude", and "Little Miss Sunshine", I like books that are angst-ridden but bittersweet like "The Perks of Being A Wallflower". Anyway, I think you get the general idea of what I like. Pretty much anything in the arts that has an angst-ridden but bittersweet kind of style to it. I want to know if other Aspies share my interests who are more "indie" (or whatever you'd call someone who's into the emotional side of the arts - and DON'T say "emo" >:( because I do have a sense of humor) than they are "nerd". Seriously I can't stand a lot of stereotypically "nerdy" things because they seem so detached from the real world. I suppose that's why a lot of Aspies like that stuff because they can't relate well to the real world, but I'm different than that!

And as I said earlier, I'm all for humor. Don't think I'm some depressed emo/goth guy just 'cuz of what I said. Homestar Runner and MST3K both rule, and so does The Big Bang Theory! Believe me, the idea of cutting yourself and wearing black makeup for what seems to be no particular reason doesn't sound appealing to me either.

Bottom line, though, I want to meet more Aspies that are interested in what I'm interested in who have little or no interest for "nerdy" things. Please respond back as soon as you can if you're one of these people!

P.S. If one of you who responds happens to be in the L.A. area don't hesitate to give me ur email address or whatever and maybe we can meet up sometime! :D

Really? Did you meet a girl on here and like her? I guess some of my interests don't really fit the nerdy stereotype either. I haven't played video games in years and I like late 70 rock/punk. But I do have some of the weird body language characteristics (I've been called a "ret*d" because of this), stims and eye contact issues, difficulties with managing activities and time etc. I want to see the movie "full metal jacket", if I can find it.

I think you'll find many here who have a unique perspective on things... and aren't exactly stereotypical nerds.

I'll use myself as an example.

I'm casually interested in many nerdy things... like video games, science fiction, fantasy, role playing(more of a board game fan myself). But I don't approach the extreme fandom that others have.

The things I'm more interested in are more unique and my own... and don't fit a stereotype. I'm really into math and exploring philosophical ideas. I'm also really into music, and I create my own electronic music. Like you I'm also into comedy... hard core into comedy. I love to laugh. I've even started to do stand up comedy... I like it so much. These are the things that really push and define who I am, the traditional nerdy things are more like side interests. And much of that culture I don't identify with at all...

I also like the angst/bittersweet style... with a twist of comedy. I like stuff that exposes the quiet desperation of those who are bold enough to have their own unique style. I'm not an avid ready, but I read Winesburg Ohio... and those are the kind of stories I love and identify with.

I think you'll others like you here. It's weird to not identify with any other group of people. It seems like 'nerds' finally find a group to connect with... and then that group becomes just as 'clicky' and bad as the groups that reject them in the first place. I tend to not fit in even among the misfits... I can fit into all groups... and yet I can't find a group to call my own.

I don't like "nerdy" things but I don't really like "normal" stuff either.

I second that. I HATE video games and NEVER been into Star Wars....LOL eww. Sorry, no offense to anyone who does like them. I have some friends who love all that stuff, I just don't get it.

Although, my interests aren't so normal either. I'm really into Russian history, and horror movies, and yes I love to bead....I make jewelry. Anyways, what I do like is watching horse racing, polo, tennis, and going out, traveling, etc....oh and I love writing, prose, and lots of poetry.

I'm not that nerdy, my interests are more art related and I'm into music.
But I am a complete nerd when it comes to the internet, I'm into all the internet memes and the youtube poops and websites like ED or somethingawful which is packed with nerdy internet phrases and that.

Not emo? May I put forward Goth then if it feels more comfy?

To be fair it's kinda nerdy to do whatever you do as long as you do it on an 'Aspie' level.

I study neuropsychology, I'm a gamer, I used to wear make-up, I'm dearly goth, I watch BBT and I listen to EBM and classical music, my library is gigantic but nowadays I can't read..

Consider what makes someone nerdy and sum up what you like, not what others shouldn't like, it's easier that way..:)

Maybe in the eyes of some I'm not the best basis for comparison because I'm undiagnosed, but my "interests" include skiing; various team sports (both playing and watching); barbecuing; smoking grass; most forms of guitar-driven music and then some (both playing/writing and listening); reading psychology, anthropology, history, and some fiction (yes, from time to time, including "sci-fi"); tattoos; fishing; some video games... You get the picture, they are all over the place.

I think by a kids definition of nerdy, not at all. I havnt owned a gaming system since high school. have an almost passionate hatred of anime (other than miyazaki, and tezuka for pure historical movie history). I know how to build a computer, but anytime something breaks, i just rebuild, cant fix/diagnose. I follow sports religously, what ever is on ESPN, if i'm not watching a movie, i'm watching baseball, basketball, soccer, football, what ever is on. I played hockey, baseball and football growing up, from probably 5 years old till 14, year-round I was never not enrolled in some sport, hockey and football through high school.

But I think if people knew my endless knowledge of voice over actors and the cartoons they've done they would consider it very nerdy. That some of my favorite shows are Futurama and Spongebob. I have a huge passion for b horror movies, love MST3k. I rarely read anything anymore unless its historical non-fiction.

If it came down to it, and I had to chose a side, i'm standing side by side with the nerds.

I don't know the first thing about computers.

I play some video games but I'm not heavily into any of them. I'm more into stuff like music, outdoors (especially skiing) football, all kinds of stuff.

I don't really see why it matters that much, though.

To all who have replied, thank you. It seems as though while there are Aspies out there who aren't nerdy, none really seem to be what I'm into. Eh, oh well. Maybe you have some non-Aspie friends I can hook up with who are accepting of Aspies and like the things I like. I realize no one can have everything in common, but it seems like what I'm finding isn't even close...except for maybe the one who said they have a "nerdy sense of humor" and likes SpongeBob and MST3K (I'm a big fan of the talking sponge myself!) As I said I can totally relate to that :P

I still hate the term "emo" (although whoever said "Hi emo", I thought that was funny :P), "goth" is maybe a slightly better way of putting it but it still doesn't fit me. Poopylungstuffing, you described what I liked as "hipster", and I like that! =D BTW, that's a cool username!

Xs142, good advice. The only reason I'm summing up what I like vs. what others don't like is 'cuz I want something different. Mainly, I want to meet people who like what I like, won't bore me, and have the same (or similar) social and/or neurological problems I do.

Sgrannel, yes I did "meet" a girl on here but we haven't met in person and I don't wanna discuss anything further than that about her out of consideration.

My biggest interest right now is playing electric guitar. Technically, it's more cerebral than athletic, but not "nerdy".

I'm not really into nerdy things - well, except for memorizing pi. That might qualify as nerdy, but I don't like it for the math. Mostly I like learning languages. I know Spanish, Romanian, some French and Italian, and a little bit of a dozen other languages. I'm taking classes this summer in French and ASL. The one I really want to learn is Russian. At first I just wanted to learn the alphabet, but I got really into it. I plan on majoring in Russian in college.
