Messages for the last person with my number
Some 12-year-old had my cell number last. I just got a local number on Kris's plan, I haven't even given it to my parents yet. It's not like I ever use a phone anyways, and reception here kinda sucks. It's more an in-touch-when-out phone than a talk phone.
Except.. it's been getting text messages. First was "i see u"
Then, from another number, I got a fricking chain message! Seriously, a chain text message! So I was like "WTF?" and Kris responded to it "Go away." So they replied that no, I know them, it's so-and-so. I replied "wrong number." They said that it's not a wrong number "I" gave them the number in sixth grade last year. Um, yea, obviously not me. So of course I replied "not me." They didn't believe me. So, um, how does one properly explain in a text message (140 characters) that whoever they're trying to reach doesn't have that number anymore? They thought I was joking or something. I replied something about having just gotten the number, and they said "then how did I get this number." They gave it to them before moving, apparently. I wasn't getting anywhere so I just stopped responding.
It does make me feel better that at least the "i see u" message was meant for somebody that somebody else knew, rather than some creepy stalker.
I kinda feel bad for the kid that they won't be able to get in contact with their friend. How do you respond to something like that? I've never texted much at all, my dad thinks that phones are for talking and not for texting, and I was on my parents' plan before. So, um, there's this whole text-culture, and I know zero about it.
I hope they didn't give the number to lots of people..
There is only one way out of this mess. Go to your cell phone service provider, explain the situation, and request a new number. This sort of thing happens from time to time because there are more phones and fax machines out there than there are unique phone numbers. I've read that the phone companies attempt to have a large gap between when person A disconnects the numeber and when person B gets the number as "new". Obviously it wasn't enough of a gap this time. So tell them at the phone company. They've heard it before and they'll give you a new number.
That just sounds creepy to call some middle school kid.
Probably when I stopped responding they figured that I wasn't kidding that I wasn't who they thought I was. If the person who had the number last was moving, it seems kinda "Duh" that they'd change their number to something local to wherever they moved to. Too bad I can't figure out who had my number last and tell 'em somebody is trying to contact them. Heh, unless they changed their number because of that. But it wasn't anything harassing or anything (well, I have no idea about the "i see u" one, but one that I texted back seemed to just not believe that I wasn't the person they thought I was.)
I'm not adept at this communicating-in-140-characters thing. As I'm sure y'all can tell from my posts.. lol
Just ignore it, it will go away eventually. When I got my new number, I kept getting calls from Time Warner Cable and a bunch of random people for some guy who must have had my number before. Since I don't answer my phone if I don't recognize the number, I kept getting weird messages for the guy (you'd think people would hear the voice mail message, hear that not only is it the wrong person, but that I'm not even the same gender as who they were trying to call, and hang up, but apparently no one is that intelligent). Eventually I got one from the cable company saying this was my last warning and they were going to disconnect my service the next day, and I haven't heard from them since. I also got messages from his mother, which is weird because you'd think your mom would be one of the first people you would give your new number to. I did use anywho.com to look up the guy they were trying to call, but it never crossed my mind to actually contact him. If he wanted people to be able to contact him, he would have given out the correct number.
