Nobody likes a surly store clerk, but the nice ones can be so friendly they almost feel like they could be your friend.

But then I remember, they pretty much 'have' to be friendly. It's part of their job. Friendly people make other people want to come back to that store (or other place of business). So I've basically had to tell myself that at the very least, a friendly worker in a store is friendly for other reasons than they actually like you. Well, they *might* on a superficial level, but that's about it.

That's a godd assessment i think. they're excellent for practicing body language, eye contact and small talk with for that very reason. They will react enough for you to notice if you do something off putting or pleasing to them but it wont ruin your life if you make a mess of it.

I am agreeing. Being a liked customer is possible. I have seen it happen. If you both get along real well, generaly you tend to get tiny little benifits from them. It is a requirment to be polight though, because rude employees hurt the business.

I have to be careful not to take advantage of people in positions that require them to be "nice". I would be an A-hole if I were to express romantic interest in waitresses, or anyone else in a position where my being too friendly would create a conflict of interest, people who aren't totally free to say "no". I am very neutral to store employees who are friendly, and usually say nothing when the ask "how are you?" because I know they're somewhat required to say that. One of my professors once said "you come on too strong". Now I know what she was talking about. I may have been sending the wrong signals unintentionally.

I work with the public sometimes. I am not nice because it "is my job." I am nice because I like people. I am nice because being cordial makes the world a more pleasant place in which to live.

Oh yeah well there's always that but I'm distinguishing that from someone being nice because they want to be someone's actual friend.

It's only natural that people working in stores have to be very friendly and helpful.
When you go shop you dont want to hear things like "go do it yourself" or "I'm not gonna help you".

When you shop, or do business, it's normal to be nice and friendly --> Good impression --> comfortable
i mean no one would want to go in and shop in a place where all the workers were mean or something else, cause they would feel like they arent welcome.

You would think so. But come to New York City some time. The store clerks will bite your head off. And in certain "hipper" stores, they will actively ignore you.
