Hi,

I went to sleep away camp in high school. My parents forced me to go. Did you go to sleep away camp as a child or teen? How was it? Did you do socially inappropriate/embarassing things, get bullied, etc, or did you have the best time of your life? How was it for you?

The only thing that qualifies as 'sleepaway camp' that I ever went to, was the grade 7 camping trip that I got to stay overnight at one night, whereas the camping trip itself was 2 nights. Mom brought me up the second day, I forget why I didn't get to go the first day.

Other than that, there were few 'summer camps' in my area and my parents never felt compelled to send any of us kids to any of them.

Spent a summer at a music camp, another as a counselor there. Some of the best times of my life, once I acclimated to the changes... the structure helped me greatly. Not to say it was without incident, but the overall sense of those times is positive.

I slept a lot away when I was younger, even know.

I do not like indoor group facilities, but sleeping in a 8 person tent or my own tent is fine.

Did a lot of camps, both as member or as volunteer. I am having problems with getting the proper amount of sleep. Sometimes I decide to wander off and spend some time alone.

A couple of times I went to a weekend camp in the Florida Keys. Mixed feeling. It was "fun" in that it was something that interested me, but it was horrible because other kids weren't nice to me.

I went on two brief sleepaway camps when I was 11 and in a day camp. These went pretty well. I also went to an outdoor school and was bullied by some boyes.

I went to 3 week sleepaway camp when I was 14. The boys my age bullied me. I sought help from the authorities, who didn't take it seriously.

In the latter two camps, I was popular with the girls. Jewish girls like intelligent men. I did get tired of a dominant clique. One girl could only talk about sex in the most mechanical terms. Years later, I learned why that was her favorite subject: she is stupid and had nothing to talk about.
