So I needed to call my lab partner, Jonathan, this morning to talk about our biology project. His sister answered the phone and said he was out, and he'd be back later. She asked whether I wanted to leave a message, and I said that it was okay---I'd wait until another time.

She didn't say how long it would be before he came home, though. When is it ok to call back? How long is an appropriate time to wait without coming off as pestering or impatient and excessive?

It depends on how soon the project is due. If you've got a week, then go ahead and wait a day, and next time leave a message. It's unlikely the sister would even remember you called, much less what for. Most people write messages.

However, if this project is due in the AM or something, then you might want to hound him.
