Pet names and xxxx

Does anyone else find it odd or unnerving when friends or acquaintances add xxx's on the end of texts and messages or call you things like babe or hunny? I can't really explain why, it just feels slightly odd and makes me wonder what they mean by it. I have a few friends that do it and facebook friends I've never met and don't even know that well who do. Maybe it's more a young persons thing as my girlfriend and most of her friends do it (which also makes me feel unsettled)
Apparently there is a code to what the number of x's mean but I didn't know that till recently and now I wonder if most people know it and therefore they do mean something by it

I remember when I was called "dearest". I miss that.

x's are kisses. o's are hugs.
calling someone babe or honey is just a way to bond with someone.
my friends and I don't say things like that.
