Did I cut in line and was I rude?

Popeyes had a special yesterday. $5.99 for a bucket of 8 pieces of regular chicken. There was about 20 people waiting. The wait was about an hour. I ordered the chicken tender meal which is different from what everyone else was ordering.

I politely asked the manager if I had to wait for an hour since I did not order the regular chicken. She said I would have to wait. The people at the front of the counter were waiting for the chicken to be cooked to put them in the boxes. I politely pointed out that I am sure no one waiting would care if I got my order before them since I was ordering something different (I know I would not). I realized that I had gotten in a semi argument which I usually never do with food employees due to what they could do to your food.

I got my food after about a 20 minute wait. Did I cut in line?

There are probably some unknown factors that we need to know in order to answer this question (i.e. Would the cooks have to stop preparing the other chicken people were waiting for? Did it delay other people getting their food? Are the tenders cooked separate from the other chicken. If it takes only 30 seconds away from preparing the other chicken to throw my tenders in the fryer, am I cutting in line?)

Even if I was right, was I wrong for telling someone how to do their job?


After I left I did feel bad.

I posted this on Craigslist and people pretty much said I was wrong.

You did what you thought at that time was the best thing. Therefore you didn't do anything wrong on purpose, and THAT's what matters. :wink:
The people behind the desk were probably stressed about all the work, so they were easily irritable. But they must have had a good thought since they could give you your order quicker.

EDIT: More concrete answer, in short, yes you probably did cut the line.
Was it rude?, I would have to say yes, to some extend.
But the fact is, you probably also had a busy and stressed day and it was not helping by standing in line!
Then again, I'm in for treating people equally, no matter what, but I try to do it as positive I can, so I would have waited, and if I was standing by the desk I would have considered it rude.

I do see your thinking, and as the special kid said, you thought you were doing the right thing, so it's not worth beating yourself up about; it's over now.

In future though, I think you should wait in line with the others. How did you know that everyone in the other queue wanted the special deal? Did you ask all 20 of them?

I don't know.

Thinking doing the right thing does not make me feel better. People a lot of times believe what they need to believe. Sometimes subconsciously.

It's okay to feel that way. We all make mistakes. Worst is, it's not always I'm learning from them!

Well, sometimes that's a good thing. If you f****d up and didn't feel bad about it for a while, there would be something wrong with you.

You'll feel better soon, but in the meantime, use the guilt to motivate you to change how you act in future.

I would say what you did was wrong. You were waiting in line and people in front of you were waiting for their food and they go in order. If they gave you your order ahead of time skipping all those people, they would have to do the same with everyone else too who also ordered something different and it be chaos. They have so many workers who is preparing food they can't keep cutting people in line to give them their food ahead of time or else other people who have been waiting before you will never get their food. That's why they go in order.

I would say yes you did cut in line and it was rude of you. But you recognized it was very wrong of you.

If the product you wanted was ready to go, waiting for it makes no sense. If others are waiting for their product to be prepared, they should not hold you up.

I'd not have waited 20 minutes for fast food....in either case.

Heck, if the line was too long and I didn't want to wait in that long line, I would have just left going "forget it."
