Basic Social Skills for College
I have bad behavior. (There I admit it like you admit alcoholism) I HAVE BAD BEHAVIOR! IMO for going back to College (since I've messed up in the past I was going to do the following)
Hi I'm Brandy if any of you *students* or Mr. X have a problem with my behavior please feel free to approach me and discuss it with me thank you.
IMO this covers my back and if you see behavior issues with me then talk to me/teacher and I can try to resolve them for you.
That's MY plan of action for returning to College.
- Don't appear like a know-it-all.
- Do READ THE TEXTBOOKS. Teachers will expect you to read it on your own, and ask them if you don't understand something in it. You won't be spoon-fed knowledge like in high school.. Some of them test purely on the textbook, some purely on the lectures, but most do a combination of the two.
- Go to your classes. All of them. If you do have to miss, make sure to ask someone if you can copy their notes and ask them what was covered.
- Standards of dress can be more relaxed in college. That is, wearing sweats every day might be acceptable. You still have to bathe every day and brush your teeth at least twice a day.
- Visit teachers during their posted hours. You'll find out which are friendly and will help mentor you by seeing how approachable they are.
- Take more classes by the teachers whom you liked. You'll know their teaching/testing style, and they will get to know you and help get you internships.
- Speaking of, start doing internships the summer after your freshman year, and do internships every year after that. You'll gain experience, get to see what you like and don't like, and collect job references.
- If you hate the teacher on the first or second class, drop it immediately and take something else. You won't like them any better by the 4th week, and now it's too late.
- Join some clubs, based on your special interests. If those don't work out, join different clubs. Don't hide in your room all day every day. You'll be depressed and lonely. If the clubs don't work out, then at least go to the library or somewhere on campus to study once in a while so you're not a hermit.
- Some students are only there to party. They won't understand your need to study. You can't change them. Just go study somewhere else.
- Find students who are there to learn. Hang out with them.
- Don't eat nothing but junk food. If you start drinking, don't drink too much.

I second this advice VERY well said. I love the know it all part DING DING DING! that's me miss know it all LOL! Love the tips which I'll have to apply when I go back soon I HOPE!
Wow! That's a fantastic list Athena. (hope you don't mind the shortened name - come to think of it, wouldn't it have just been quicker for me to type it out? lol - oh well! this is me!)
Seriously though, that is some very good advice, not just for Aspies, but for anyone at all in college.
I would add one more thing.
Use that list even if you attend only online classes. I just finished a two year degree all online, and what she says there applies just as much to online classes.
Except for one thing, but it doesn't matter. You should still brush yer dang teeth and bathe!

I'm not likely to be around much longer. As before when I first signed up here years ago, I'm finding that after a long hiatus, and after only a few days back on here, I'm spending way too much time here again already. So I'm requesting my account be locked, banned or whatever. It's just time. Until then, well, I dunno...
