I wanted to post about my favorite obsession, because there's at least one Aspie I dance with and it's her favorite obsession too.

Salsa rueda is like salsa dancing, but with a square dancing element. You dance in a circle to specific "calls" which tell you what moves to do with your dance partner or with the group. Since you switch partners a lot, you don't need to bring a partner with you. (This is what first attracted me -- my husband doesn't like to dance.)

The plusses: you don't need to bring a partner; you don't need to have any special dance skills; you meet lots of people (especially of the opposite sex); it seems to attract a really diverse population.

you need: a decent sense of rhythm and to not mind being touched. The good thing is that the touching is all choreographed, so you know what to expect.

It's very energetic and exciting and I have made lots of casual dancing friends, which believe me is not something that happens to me often!

What if you have 'guilty/aspie feet?'

What I'm saying is, I don't dance. I used to, but for some reason, dancing seems 'wrong' to me. I could probably handle square dancing, but anything with couple isn't going to happen. Also, I wouldn't go somewhere to dance, because as I said, it doesn't feel right.

Hands are actually more important than feet in salsa rueda, though as I said you need to have a sense of rhythm.

But if you don't like to dance, obviously this thread doesn't apply to you.

Here's an example of what it looks like: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CRJgIecr-II

I picked that one because I thought it was incredibly cool to see people doing the same moves I know in Poland! Also, the stuff they're doing is relatively easy and not as scary as some of the really impressive performances.
