Is it normal to go to a bar alone, and is it fun?

I've read in the ''Going everywhere alone'' thread that some people go to a bar alone. I never went to a bar, but isn't it considered weird to go without a friend? Or is that normal in the US?

If it's in any way acceptable to go on your own to a bar I might give it a try. As a lot of people go there, it must be fun in some way?

Are bars aspie friendly?

Surely if bars are dreadful places people wouldn't visit them?

It's an accepted activity. I would encourage you doing a little research on local bars first. My favorite types are irish bars and neighborhood bars. Bars vary because they target different clientele. Some play loud music or have a lot of obnoxious young people in them. Others are more mellow or ,when rowdy, are so in a different way. Hard to explain. They can get crowded depending on the time of day and day of the week.

I should say, I never go to bars alone. Maybe I'm not the best person for speaking to that activity.

Going to bars alone is only really any fun if you have a good chance of meeting friends there or if you're one of those people that has an easy time making conversation with people you don't know. If you're a more reserved type then it's generally just an expensive way to sit and watch TV (at least in my experience).

I don't know that it isn't acceptable. There's no law against it and Emily Post really hasn't covered boozing in her ettiquette guide. (Though that would make a cool poster at Spencer Gifts.) Since I generally don't care what others think of me I go to the bar alone all the time.

If you're planning to drink heavily, or if you think you might not get home safely after drinking, it would certainly be safer to have someone with you. If you think you might need a designated driver it's a good idea to bring someone along who doesn't mind not drinking alcohol, so long as you respect their schedule.

And if you do bring someone with you, make sure it's someone you can trust.

Someone you just met the day before may not be the best drinking buddy.

I've never gone into a bar, alone and I don't plan on doing so.

I do go to a bar alone every now and then when I want a drink or perhaps a meal and a drink. If I don't know anyone there I just break out my psp or stare at the tv.

Thanks for the replies. I might consider going to a bar once.

If so many people like it there must be something fun about it.

If you want a gentle introduction, go at lunchtime. Have lunch and a beer.

It depends on what you want to do. I usually go alone if I'm just there to eat. If I want to socialize or drink a lot, then I take a couple of friends with me.

It also depends on what kind of bar you go to. Most restaurants have a bar, and in those its fine if you want to be alone. But there are dedicated bars in which all you do is go and socialize and watch sports. It is in those bars that I prefer to be with a few people I know, especially since a lot of the people there can get quite drunk.

I pretty much view going to a bar the same as going to a restaurant. I go by myself, sit in a booth or at a table, order a drink or two, order some food and then leave when I'm done.
