i am fairly certain someone i know has Asperger's. he knows he's different than other people but obviously doesn't understand why - he is like a feral person who puts on a mask around other people and doesn't feel like he can be himself around anyone but me. he's desperate to keep some kind of connection with me, but i can't be in his life right now.

i don't know what he thinks the reason for his difference is, but he clings very tightly to his uniqueness. i'm afraid it might be very unwelcome news. but i don't want him to think he's alone in the world either. (and of course, i could be wrong)

help!

Tell him about AS and then ask him to talk to a doctor about it.

Only they can truly diagnose someone.

You can suggest it but you can't tell him. You don't know for sure if he does or not.

It's hard to say. I know I would have appreciated if someone told me earlier, but it really depends on the person. I'm in the same situation with my dad. I don't know if I should tell him or not, I don't know how he would react.

ok, let me rephrase that. i'm not trying to offer a diagnosis. i'm pretty sure i'm on the mark, but whether i am or not isn't the matter at hand.

i'm just wondering whether the suggestion that he might have it is a good idea, or if it could potentially be really hurtful.

thx ..

Whilst the road to hell is paved with good intentions, sometimes doing something beneficial is never easy.

Personally, it's all a matter of choice. If you want my opinion, print information about AS. Direct him to this site. Tell him he is not alone, and answer any question he has. This should be done in a quiet place with a lot of time to explain.

irrelevant.

i am wondering how to help this person, not have a debate about whether self diagnosis is valid. there are plenty of threads about that.

again, let me rephrase. maybe i did not make my question clear.

is there anyone here who was first introduced to the idea they might be on the spectrum by someone they knew, and if so, was it a welcome or unwelcome suggestion?

extremely relevent, without facts to support your perception then why tell if he may not have it

irrelevant, because that's not what i'm asking.
