Does anyone else have a massive aversion to country clubs? Not that I could afford to join one, but I wouldn't if I could.

I just find the entire concept a horribly convoluted version of socialization because...

1. With some of them membership is by invitation only. A group of people have to get around and decide whether you are "good enough" to join, and "good enough" usually means "rich enough", and "popular enough"and "socially prominent enough" and in some cases "white enough", "gentile enough" or "jewish enough"

2. People pay thousands of dollars a year just to socialize with certain people, in relationships that are almost entirely self serving. And in the case above, they have to be invited to pay that much.

3. Some of them are more than $100,000 per year, and the only purpose of this is because those who run the club and are members think a person's worth is determined by their financial worth.

4. Most of the social interactions are entirely fake. The people are fake and the friendships are fake.

I might be fake to the extent of being socially acceptable but I'm sincere in my friendships.

5. Loss of money, and thus membership, means loss of "friendship". Honestly how many of those members continue to maintain friendships with those who leave the club?

6. And the most horrendous thing, people actually want to join these things!

I'll stick to public parks for my recreation.

I have never really payed much attention to country clubs to be honest because I automatically detected BS in them. Since you brought it up, it is just an organization making money off of people who want to feel like they are privledged in some sort of way. Gives them meaning to their boring lives, I guess. Its just like any other function or group.

Yep.
When I took a trip down to California I found a lot of these "PRIVATE: MEMBERS ONLY!" social clubs.
It's just another way of rich people buying status.
For some reason, they feel vastly superior to the rest of the population because they are privileged to play golf on a certain field of grass.
It would be a tragedy if they had to play golf with someone who only made $80,000 dollars a year.
Even if I came from a wealthy family, I would find no reason to attend these places.
I would however, consider opening one myself to take advantage of all the pompous idiots out there, and put their money to better use.

I pity people who live in the countryside, there are rarely any alternatives out there.
