Does anyone else have a massive aversion to country clubs? Not that I could afford to join one, but I wouldn't if I could.
I just find the entire concept a horribly convoluted version of socialization because...
1. With some of them membership is by invitation only. A group of people have to get around and decide whether you are "good enough" to join, and "good enough" usually means "rich enough", and "popular enough"and "socially prominent enough" and in some cases "white enough", "gentile enough" or "jewish enough"
2. People pay thousands of dollars a year just to socialize with certain people, in relationships that are almost entirely self serving. And in the case above, they have to be invited to pay that much.
3. Some of them are more than $100,000 per year, and the only purpose of this is because those who run the club and are members think a person's worth is determined by their financial worth.
4. Most of the social interactions are entirely fake. The people are fake and the friendships are fake.
I might be fake to the extent of being socially acceptable but I'm sincere in my friendships.
5. Loss of money, and thus membership, means loss of "friendship". Honestly how many of those members continue to maintain friendships with those who leave the club?
6. And the most horrendous thing, people actually want to join these things!
I'll stick to public parks for my recreation.
