I've been talking to some friends about the problems I have with understanding people and life in general and they just seem to think that I will pick up skills or learn things from experiences, but I feel like the main reason is because my Asperger's alters the way I percieve things which does provide more diverse opinions, but also limits what we are able to understand.

I'm wondering if people with Asperger's will ever progress to the level that NTs do in terms of social understanding and if not, what's the best we can achieve in trying to form and maintain relationships?

I know that for many ASD people, making friends and having company is a big deal, and I want to explore what we can do as human beings, not as "disadvantaged" people, to form relationships in maybe a different way, as we all know we find it very difficult to do so by conventional means.

I think in some ways Aspies understand life better than most. I think an Aspie for example is able to recognize some social aspects as so much b.s. because they are observing from a detached position.

I think you're right, in that aspies perhaps have a better equipped mind for philosophy and are better at analysation, but this is a world based on NT logic, and I know that people in general don't have the interest, patience or motivation to discover us as people, which is when we are able to interact effectively.

I think we struggle with everything on the surface, but how does one accomplish anything without starting at the beggining?

I think aspies understand life just as well as NTs. They deal the same things NTs do, right?. They're just not as well equipped sometimes.

I was just going to say that. We see the world different... 'better' is so subjective.

Ivan, I believe that some of us can get quite good at relationships. Why don't you try and see how far you can get? Good luck.

I don't expect to ever really understand the NT view of the world. It's ruled by so much emotion, faith, and culture. It baffles my more reasonable and logical view of the world.

We understand life much deeper than NT people in my opinion. They are neither better or worse than us, but just on a diffrent plane. They have communication, while we have our advantages. [the advantages go on and on, so im not going to bother mentioning them all].

I think as part of the human race, we play a very important role. We have the ability to see things others do not. even if we have a much harder time acting 'normal'.

Im a diagnosed aspie. my entire life, I have worked hard to mask my social issues, and constantly feel repulsed at certain things, or even talking. Many people dont even catch it, even psychology majors. But, admittedly there are times the downsides come out.

think about it like this. if life were a big MMO, we would have skill trees and ect ect. but lets say there is a hadicap bar, much like in the old original starfox 64. where the ships were faster but had less health.

we are kinda like that. we take blows to communicating 'normally' but take an outrageious aount of gains. so much, that communication isnt even a problem anymore.

In some ways I think I understand "life" better than NTs.

Being shunted to the outside gives people like us an interesting perspective. One that tends to be more objective than NTs who are used to life going on around them rather than being forced to watch from the sidelines.

After contemplating this further, I think that because aspies are ostracized by society, we do have a different perception on everything and in time, I believe that will benefit us more than hinder us.

After enough time, we will find the people with enough compassion and understanding to become friends with and more, because they are the people we need. If we all made friends with the norms who wouldn't understand the quirks and abnormailites AS brings, we wouldn't feel any better than if we were sat on the sidelines once again.

We are a blessed people, and we will have salvation (:
