Does anyone find it odd when you are sitting in a room with another person and they don't talk?

I am currently sitting in a room with my housemate. She is on her computer and I am on my computer. I am just wondering if there is suppose to be some social interaction? Is it odd that we aren't acknowledging each other? Am I suppose to do something? Is it suppose to be awkward?

I just don't know what I am suppose to do, if anything.

I wouldn't worry about it. English speaking cultures seem to have a big hang up about silence when in the presence of others. Sometimes if you don't get a long it can be for the best. Otherwise you only go and find more reasons to hate each other

With some people it can indicate that they're unhappy with you for whatever reason, and neurotypical individuals do seem to have some strange compulsion to fill every silence, however brief, with inane conversation.

However, as laptops and websurfing phones and texting have become more and more common, it seems to be much more acceptable now to sit in the same room with other people and ignore them, which should be a social boon for Autistics everywhere. :P
