Harsh words?

I had recently went out to lunch at a local urban mall in a big city and most of the tables in this one area were full. There was one table with two women sitting on an opposite end and the other empty. There were three tables connected to their side so i sat down ready to eat, and they turned and looked at each other for a second and then said, "Excuse, you cannot sit her because some other people are sitting here." I got up and said "Okay." They then looked at me and apologized. know that they were not intentionally being rude because I noticed a lot of co-workers were eating lunch together during break time. I then said, "Oh no, that's not your problem."

Do you think what I told them when I walked away was a little snotty and harsh? If so, I would like some better things to mention so that I don't look like I am pitching an attitude with them.

I do not know what I would say in a situation like that, but neither do I know what those two people might have thought about what you said. It sounds to me like the regulars there think their usual seats should always be left for them, and that is definitely a problem.

I try to avoid situations, like that. They make me feel, very uncomfortable.
