I tend to ask people what language they speak.
If it's one I know a little of I converse in it with them.
I've made friends with Japanese, Indonesian and Finnish this way.
Please share how you start conversations?

I usually make friends by talking at people at my school.

I usually start conversations which mentioning piece of trivia or news which I know.

Usually, unless it's about something I like, I just let them talk through it all, while I just keep quiet and listen...
