You definitely are not a native of New York if you do not know where Queens is!

I live close to the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York and even I know where Queens is. NYC is a great place to visit but, I prefer the
beautiful countryside of Upstate New York.

You said "NYC area" so I'm replying, because even though I'm in New Jersey (let the mocking commence!) the city is just a quick train ride away.

Hoboken is actually far, FAR closer to my job in the Financial District than my home is.

She was asking what part of Queens. I'm pretty sure she knows where Queens is.

I am in Central Texas (1800 miles away), and I know where Queens is, and I've never been to NYC (but would like to go one of these days).

I'm not in NYC....I'm in Jersey, but I go to NYC a lot for work, and I know my way around the subways pretty well....I can hop on a ferry or a train and it doesn't take too long to get there...

Manhattan here... I work in Midtown and live in Washington Heights.

Is it just me, or is NYC about the worst place in the universe to live for an Aspie who hates noise and crowds?

I don't know. I love NYC and other cities.

I think living in a small town would be stifling. I live in and grew up in suburbia and that is "small town" enough for me, as it is the lack of anonymity and total homogeneity of the place I grew up in (on Long Island) were terrible. I feel at home in the city.

Well, there's a lot of middle ground between living in a small town and living in NYC. I moved to NYC in 2007, before I had any idea that I was an Aspie, seeking some greener pastures in terms of professional and educational opportunities. I make decent money at my job, but with NYC's insane cost of living, I'm still forced to live in a shoebox-sized apartment in a marginal neighborhood and listen to loud stereos and car alarms outside my window all night. In almost any other city, I'd be able to afford to have a lot more space, and a lot more peace and quiet. I think my ideal would be a close-in suburb or residential neighborhood of a medium-sized city like Cincinnati (where I'm originally from) or Portland, Oregon... A big enough city to have some diversity and allow one to remain relatively anonymous, but still small enough so that it doesn't become like living inside a pressure cooker.

I don't really find NYC to be noisier or more crowded than other cities. If it's small enough not to have lots of noise and crowds, it's probably boring.

Cost of living is of course another matter entirely - but this is certainly not the only US city where that is insanely high (look at e.g. San Francisco).

For me, I think, having lived near NYC my entire life, most other cities (with a few exceptions, like London) just seem like a bit of a downgrade.

But then I was born in NYC and have never lived more than a short train ride away, and my family has lived here for generations, so my perspective is probably quite different from that of someone who has come from somewhere else.

I live in Hoboken and work in the city. I moved to this area from a small town a few years ago. It was a pretty big adjustment for me.

I think the second part of that is the important part. If noise and crowds are what bother you, sure. If you have more of a social anxiety that makes you hate small groups, than no. In smaller (suburban) communities, everyone knows everyone else. Talks about everyone else. So if you do anything perceived as weird or inappropriate (my specialty) it will follow you around for ages.

If you hate noises and crowds, sure, the city might not be so fun. But I find a certain safety in a crowded environment. Nobody is staring at me, at least not on the street. If it's full of noises, any noise I could make don't matter so much.
