Breaking bad social habits/routines
I'm going to be brief because I have to get to work, but I have this awful problem where I do the same things over and over again in relationships even though they prove to give bad results. I'm a 23 year old female who hasn't been diagnosed with AS yet, but it's a pretty sure thing (even my parents think so).
For instance, I know there are certain subjects my boyfriend and I will ALWAYS disagree on and that talking to him about these things always ends in frustration or tears. I actually suspect he's a little bit Aspie too, if not full on AS! But that's beside the point. I always tell myself "Don't bring up Topic X again, it will just make him upset, talk to your friend about it.", but I just cannot break that habit and it's like every time I think this will be the one time he reacts the way I want him to. I have this experience with my parents too. Like I know being honest with my mom about certain aspects of my life will just cause trouble, but I just keep doing it.
I think part of my reasoning is because I want to connect with them (my boyfriend and my mom are 2 relationships where I do this the most), but it always ends up backfiring.
Anyone else experience this? Anyone have any tips to break these stupid habits?
For now, I recommend taking it day by day. Avoid the habit and do so for 21 days. That's how long it takes to form a habit, so that's how long it should take to break one.
