Is using your hands when you speak is that weird or not? my NT brother said to me that is normal to use your hands when you talk.

basicly when i speak i sometimes use my hands an excessive amoun and speak at the same time when talking about or describing things etc...

the excessive use of hands might have someting to do with the fact I am on the autisim spectrum perhaps?

Nope! I think it's perfectly normal-if such a thing exists. I know plenty of NTs who use their hands more than I do when they speak, not that I'm not guilty of using my hands to enunciate what I'm talking about, either!

My ex did this too and for some reason it freaked my mother out so she said to me it was a sign of schizophrenia because they tend to do that with their hands. It never freaked me out and I never paid that much attention nor took notice.

Excessive is the pertinent word. Maybe try to turn it down a notch.

Personally, I very rarely use hand gestures. I have to think consciously about it. It can be useful though.

If it is, I would suggest not going to any Italian parts of town. You'll think you are in an asylum. :D

Speaking like a health professional, this is not true and has never been, your mother was not right about it.
Anyway, for all I know, both NTs and people on the spectrum might use their hands excessively when they speak, it's not a matter of being NT or autistic. Though, come to think about it, I myself actually use my hands less than most people when I speak.

I just find it easier to express myself when using my hands. its what works for me and it ain't my fault other people have a problem with it.

Where I come from, waving and gesticulating with the hands is refered to as "speaking Italian" or "Italian sign language".

Just don't do it while driving.
