I guess I'm trying to determine whether someone could be a potential friend and how I would go about trying to start a friendship with them.

The person is the veterinarian I used to go to. She quit to supposedly spend more time with her kids. She's a very friendly person, everyone seems to love her. She was the most popular, sought after vet at the clinic. She has told me she enjoys talking to me (about my cats' health problems) because I am interested in what she says and I know what she's talking about. She says I taught her some things about veterinary medicine she didn't know. She's a very cool person with a good heart. I enjoy talking to her and that's saying a lot because I don't like to talk and I don't like people.

She is someone I'd like to be friends with but I never wanted to say anything because it seemed inappropriate. I didn't want to cross any lines. Now that she doesn't work, it seems like it would be ok to be friends. But I don't know if she wants to or if she's interested. I feel kind of silly and childish. I wouldn't even know how to go about starting a friendship. I certainly can't invite her to my house (long story) so I don't even know how this would work. Also, I'm 10 years younger with no kids. I feel (emotionally) like a kid compared to her.

What should I do? Should I attempt to start a friendship? How do I go about doing that?

If she had never said or done anything to indicate actual personal interest beyond her work-related conversations, I would suspect that might be the extent of the friendliness she has already shown. However, I cannot see why there would be anything wrong with your giving her a call to let her know your are thinking of her and are curious about how things are going for her as long as you do *not* talk about anything in any way related to veterinary work.
