I have friends. I'd never had friends before last year. One of my friends asked me if I wanted to hang out over break. I said yes, but I don't really know what "hanging out" means. What is it?

I think it means being together without any definite plans of going anywhere.

If this particular friend is male, it probably means that he's interested in dating you or kissing you.

Like Purplekitty said, "hanging out" is code for dating when saying it to a member of the opposite gender. But, if this person is the same gender it probably means they just want to do social things with you like going to the arcade, getting lunch, etc.

Yeah, it's basically a phrase meaning "I want to do something with you, but I don't really know what."

If it's an opposite-gender friend, it could imply something romantic, but if it's a close opposite-gender friend, it's meaning is the same as above.

This.

Pretty pointless in my opinion, though the one time I did get to hang out with a friend was admittedly pretty fun.

It means when your just with a friend without any plans, its just that just going to random places, without any plans or schedule.

This is the most fun way to be with a friend.

Its a great way to nurture a friendship / relationship with a person.
