Are there any books that anybody could recommend that can teach you how to comprehend another's speech, so you can respond immediately and appropriately?

I don't know what of books, but self-help websites like eHow and WikiAnswers will most definitely have helpful articles on any kind of social fare or dilemma that troubles you. Just type something like "how to comprehend someone's speech/speaking, etc." into Google and see what you find.

I once took speech class in my Junior year in high school and In the textbook it said a lot about the rules of conversation and body laungage. One of the things it talked about was that the more familiar people are with eachother, the closer (closer like how far apart they sit) they get when they talk.

And heres a tip I learned myself: If you want to say a lot about something, then ask [the person you're talking to] if they want to hear more or if you're boring them. For example: If I have a lot to say about my day at school then after Ive told my mom a general overview of what happened, I'll ask her if she would like me to tell her more details.
