This is NOT meant to be an NT bashing thread in any shape or form. This is merely meant to be a discussion about NT behaviors that you cannot believe are socially acceptable.

As we aspies are constantly getting... bleeped on you might say for small little things that you cant believe are actually against social rules, there are some things about NT behavior we find it hard to believe is actually okay.

My biggie: talking while watching television...I dont mean the small sidetalk...I mean the type where someone comes into the room and decides to have a loud conversation with you or another person without regard for the fact that you're watching television! Also people playing music in the same room (yes I've seen NT do this all the time) while you're trying to watch something.

Its rude to play music or talk loudly when people watch a movie in the same room, this is a NT 'rule'. The NT people you know are just rude or stupid. :s

Here's my opinion:

There are some TV programmes where the whole point is to talk over or about them. Things like Strictly Come Dancing or football. Also, NTs tend to concentrate less and switch their point of concentration more easily, so the talking with the TV on isn't really an issue because they weren't really watching it too hard anyway. With a few exceptions like say an in-depth documentary where you might say "sorry but I really want to see this" it would seem weird to object to that.
On the other hand, putting music on is just rude and you're well within your rights to complain there.

Even worse than that, NTs that think you're the one being rude when you actually would rather keep watching your show than join in their stupid conversation.

I hate it, my family has no respect when I'm trying to watch TV, they will come into the room and chat to eachother, from one side of the TV to the other, and I just think 'F*** OFF!! !' But when my dad is watching TV, no one talks because my dad will flip out

how about this one: your watching tv some one walks in and try's too start a conversation/ask a question, then when they are watching tv and you try to start a conversation/ask a question they get all snippy.

I don't understand why people have a conversation that both know is boring, yet still proceed with it.

I also don't understand why you have to be cheerful to people when you haven't had your morning coffee yet and you have a headache. I don't mean you can be rude. I mean you have to be all chipper and stuff.

Also the one about not really wanting to know how somebody is, but asking anyway.

As to the TV thing, try paying attention when you have a hearing loss in one ear.
I think the polite thing is to wait for commercials to come on.

You don't actually have to be chipper before your coffee. You just have to tell people you haven't yet had your coffee. They will absolutely understand, unless they are one of those people who is chipper without caffeine and feels superior for it. But since coffee drinkers are the majority, the typical person will understand if you say, "I'm not ready. I haven't had my coffee yet."

I don't understand much of the social mores attached to eating. Some of them are perfectly logical from a hygiene point of view, but others make the task of eating more impractical (ie: why can't I use my fingers to eat a salad?)

Keep in mind that different cultures have different social rules.

Just when you got your country or origin's social rules right, you then travel international and find out there are a whole new set of rules that one usually must follow.

You eat with your mouth, you talk with your mouth, and it's rude to talk with your mouth full. So why is eating considered a social activity?

I dont get this one either...I usually eat...comment how good the food is and leave the table. But socially eating is a weird thing. If I am too quiet, people think that I have an issue with the food or the company, but really I just dont know what to say that is an approprate dinner topic.
My dad had a major issue with what we talked about at the table...nothing gross, nothing disturbing, everything cheerful and non-confrontational. It like we go to the table and everyone turns into a stefford wife or something like that. Even now, when I eat with company...I just eat to get it over with.
