I am sober 10 years in AA and through marrying my AS husband, I realised that I too have AS. Hubby is diagnosed and I am not. I read up on the literature to learn about him but found myself learning about me. I can't believe it. But it answers so many questions for me. I have ordered some books for women with AS so I can learn more. I hope I can learn some life coping skills. Especially around socialising, understanding people, controlling my temper which can rage, meltdowns and extreme lack of confidence. I know I don't fit it and often I don't fit in AA but it has really helped me to stay stopped from drinking but they complain to me that I don't mix with them either. I try. I do it by asking lots of questions about them and having brief exchanges. Can this be that I have both? I'm ok with it, just want to get on with my life the best I can.

Yes. You can be both.

Who knows, substance abuse is often self-medication...

I was kind of one back in my early 20s, but I grew out of it. I don't drink hardly at all anymore except maybe a 12 oz. beer every once in a while.

When self medicating is mixed with a tendancy to follow routines alchoholism is a higher probability than it would likely be otherwise.

I am unsure if Aspies have a higher propensity toward alcoholism than the general public, but I can say from experience when drinking becomes a part of your daily routine, it's much easier to become dependent on it because of our tendency to follow habits.

Then you were never an alcoholic. You just drank heavily for a while.

It is certainly possible. There is even a substance abuse/alcoholism counseling thread on here in "The Haven".

Yes it is possible...I do like to drink but I would not consider myself an alcholic.

I don't see why not. I don't think the two are linked. Personally I can't drink much, upsets my stomach.

I think it's very much a person to person issue. Some are more prone to drinking no matter what. It is partially genetic also.

I've actually always had an aversion to alcohol... whereas others seem compelled to drink, like I'm sometimes compelled to eating fatty/sweet food, I only drink when I absolutely need to be drunk (there are times, I guess, when it could help if problems are just way overwhelming, and instead of suicide you simply try to knock yourself out - alcohol is good at that). I wanted to try absinthe, due to its legendary status etc., but I just couldn't handle more than a few drops... incredibly unbearable taste.

I'm pretty sure these sorts of behavioral disorders are linked to depression and related substance abuse.
