What does being happy for somebody involve? When somebody says they are happy for somebody what does this mean? Is this the same as being happy normally?

It means that when something wonderful happens to someone else, you are appreciative and congratulating of them.

I don't really feel this. With my brain I can think "oh, something good happened to my friend, that's good" but I don't really feel anything.

It's just an empty saying, a space-filler. If something good happens to someone, rather than having 10 people say "Congratulations," some of them can say "Congratulations," others can say "Good for you," others can say "I'm happy for you," and so on. You don't actually have to be happy for the person to use it properly.

I think I know how it feels to be happy for somebody. Honestly. I felt to elated when my friend got a job for which he'd applied, and when my friends have passed their driving tests, and when they've gained good results in exams etc. In fact, I think I prefer being happy for others than for myself. I don't know why, but it feels more comfortable.

Maybe you feel selfish when you feel happy for yourself.

All it means is what someone else has said, congratulating someone with good grace.

I wouldn't read too much into the actual words.. it's just a way of expressing that you think what happened to the person is good or nice.

I've never felt happy for another person. I'm not bitter, either.

I always figured it meant you are glad they are happy or it's something you do to be nice or show you care about them just by saying "I'm so happy for you."
