I've never been popular, but I've noticed that the reason people who are popular are so popular is because they're *not* normal... because to be attractive and to seem cool you have to be somewhat insane... People who are popular are popular because they're too different to simply just *fit in*, but of course, they're different in a way people like.
People who actually fit in are people who are overly normal to the point where they seem completely and utterly trivial.

The popular people in my high school were the people did some pretty wild and crazy stuff (and got away with it), so I'd tend to have to agree.

It's weird...popular people can get away with lots of crazy things and they're regarded as cool because of it. If an unpopular person tried to do the same thing, they would be laughed at, mocked and ridiculed.

But I agree, popular people are abnormal, but in an NT kind of way.

Incidently, I was thinking about this very topic for the first time the other day. My husband refers to my brother as "aytpical". Not that he's on the spectrum, but that he has an atypical brain-not sure what. He has the best "social skills" ever, funny, smiles, gracious, conservative beliefs and behavior. But he hates people. He grew up very loved and very popular only to hate densely populated areas and most of the people that admired him.
In high school, he was voted most popular.
My parents adored him and I always felt measured against him, because he could emote so easily (which is what they wanted). If he got in trouble in school, the charges were silly, "He's too happy" was one teacher's complaint.
He lives in another state that is rural and he hates the small town he lives near. When he got into a particular argument with some kind of local authority figure, some people started suggesting he run for office. Go figure!
I'd be afraid that if he go any grumpier or contrary, they'd proclaim he's a prophet!

You haven't been observing very many popular people if you have such a backwards and prejudiced notion as that.

The popular people I have observed are generally the most physically attractive and have the most "toys"....even amongst the punks and death rockers...popularity was based on physical attractiveness, self confidence, drugs and something we jokingly called "punkrock points"...ussually anti-social activities and chemical use...As far as the media creating cults of personality....there is more room for some one who is creative,intelligent,humorous....but good looks can still out weigh any of these.

Sometimes that can happen.. but A lot of the time popular people are very boring.. they can't see past their mundane, narrow minded, monotonus lives to accept people that are different.

After high school this might change a bit.. but you still get people who never grow up.

One thing I've noticed, is that sometimes the popular people can be pretty nice people. No I don't mean the fake, specific nice, but the general kind.

These sorts of people are more common in some places than others.

Totally agree.

You get rotters in all types.. some of the less popular people were also some of the most horrible people i've ever met. Most of the populat girls at school were quite nice to me, apart from a few.
