when i was younger at school i got into a heated argument with one of my friends at school.

i was being my usual hot headed self and during the arguement my friend said too me "one of these days you are going too get smashed in the face by somebody who is not as patient as me"

what do you think is the deeper message behind what my friend said too me? What is he saying about people in general with that comment he made?

i know this was a long time ago in the past but i need your opinions on this.

It means that if you don't wise up, you're going to get your face smashed in one day.

Seems like a pretty straighforward comment to me. Though the non-explicitly stated thing he said about you is that he thinks you're insufferable, and that he's only tolerating you because you're his friend. Other people who aren't your friend mightn't be so tolerant.

didn't you say that you were being hot-headed yourself? i think your friend was telling you that people will react badly to you being like that, and might not be as tolerant. you can't expect people to be nicer to you than you are to them. people wouldn't randomly smash you in the face for no reason, but if you are being really unkind or nasty then they might be nasty right back, but in a worse way.

also, moved from Random Discussion to Social Skills and Making Friends

He meant that he thinks you require a lot of patience and are frustrating and that makes people angry, so he feels that one day someone who doesn't know you or knows you and doesn't like you will either hit you or do something else mean to you because they don't like dealing with you.

It was his way of telling you that you are frustrating him and possibly others.

You don't need to look for a "deeper message". Your friend was being very blunt and straight forward with you. And his comment isn't about other people and how they behave. It's about you and your behaviour towards others.

My son is 10 and I've made similar comments to him to help him understand the effect and potential consequences of his own behaviours.

Jamesy, first, I think Hyper gives sage advice. I would only add that there are some really mean, nasty people out there; the prisons are full of them. It is best to avoid these people, and be as nice as possible to everybody else.

It is also not that difficult to tell the nasty people from the decent ones. Just watch their actions. Somebody who will treat others badly will likely treat you the same way.

I agree mostly with the ones who say it's straightforward, but I also think it means that he wants to smash you in the face but he won't because he's patient and likes you. He wants to, but he doesn't want to. I feel like that a lot.

that argument happened between me and my friend 11 years ago

when i was a kid and a teenager i used too want too smash people in the face when i was angry and often i did LOL. Today when i get frustrated its more the feeling off "i want too hit him but i wont'' :)

My mum used to say the same thing to me often, it's never actually happened though :P

Your friend was basically saying you were annoying him, and someone who wasn't your friend might get really angry over it.

Well, being friends with people involves accepting and tolerating their differences, and you and your friends should in the end, care about each other's feelings. They understand you (to a degree) and give you more patience as a result.

People who are not your friend have no attachment to you and no care. And in all likelihood don't understand you at all in the way your friends do, hence why they'd show less patience.
