I don't really know if this topic fits in this forum, but I think it's part of my coindition that I despise celebrities. I understand some of them have accomplished much (like Angelia Jolie, or Bono, who use their status to spread ideas about war and the poor situations some countries live under), but I feel like being a celebrity asks for despision. I think they haven't done anything really relevant to be famous, and it makes me sort of angry to see how much they get for nothing. This doesn't only happen with those who are famous for being famous, but also with actors, singers (not so much if they're really innovative), artists (not at all if they're actually good), and even some "thinkers" or "scientists" who try to indoctrinate people with their "superior" opinions. I'm not talking about the one who have done something relevant, but about those who go to TV and speak lots just to hear themselves speaking.

It's totally different when it comes to real scientists and activists. I respect them a lot. Sometimes this is so obvious people say I only appreciate people who study. It's not like that at all. I appreciate people who use their situations to help others and discover the wonders behind the universe. I appreciate people who create wonders themselves.

What I mean is it takes a lot for me to admire someone. I hate mythomaniacs. And sometimes I can't help but make it so obvious it bothers people.

I've never really understood the celebrity thing. I don't hate them; I don't know any personally (except two minor Scottish celebs). It helps to remember that these people have publicists behind them, often pushing the celeb in a way that doesn't really reflect them accurately. However, sometimes I'm grateful for the celebs to be there to speak up for the little man too, even though normally I think they shouldn't get involved in politics, etc, unless they want to change careers. A recent example was when Hugh Grant was going on about the press gaining info, unlawfully. It affected him personally, but he almost became a spokesperson for the ordinary individuals, who had also been affected. On this occasion, I think a celeb did a good job, outside of his field. But, in general, I really don't pay attention to them, unless they are discussing their work and I'm interested in that.

I feel the same way about celebrities. The only celebrities I truly admire are academics who are humble and genuinely good at explaining academic concepts to the public.

I remember I once saw an interview with Morgan Freeman, and the host was asking Freeman questions as if he was known for being a deep thinker. I suddenly realised that some people cannot distinguish between a wise person and an actor known for playing wise people. That's when I realised that there is something very wrong with the celebrity culture.

I like it if they just keep it simple and hook up with a charity cause.

I disagree. That's all.
