It is the one of the few activities or class that is really useful in the real world.

Every interaction is like a debate to get what you want. Being on the debate team or taking a debate class would prepare someone for the
real world.

Id like to be on a debate team too, but only because I'd like to do what comedian Ron White talked about in one of his shows. He said that he was on a debate team in high school and went into his first debate totally unprepared. The other guy went first and after he finished it was Ron's turn. He had nothing prepared at all and knew nothing about the topic so he looked at the guy and said "Yeah? Well f*** you!" When the teacher told him it was inappropriate, Ron pointed at the other debater and yelled "His Mama's a w****!"

In other words he just insulted.

I wouldn't really do that, but the way he told it, it was hilarious.

i was in the debate team in high school, and president of the debate club in college.

i don't debate anymore, and i see little use of it.

1. it really matters little on your resume.
2. formal debating is full of rules techanicalities, at the end of the day, it's like simply doing a book report rather than having an engaging discussion or learning experience.
3. debate topics are of usually global issues and domestic issues, so its mainly domain knowledge.
4. there are plenty of ways to become openminded, good at public speaking, able to refute arguments, and able to think quickly, without the need of formal organizations.
