I am not in school and I am living with my grandparents, I don't know anyone my age, and suddenly felt really frustrated about it. I have no idea what to do to go about meeting people. I felt like ripping the keys apart on my keyboard and throwing my laptop down but knew that would not be a rationale decision.

Generally, you want to light touch a variety of groups. A little bit underplay the hand. Keep it loosey-goosey and be open to reciprocating, but don't overdo even this part.

I'm thinking of political activism, jogging or hiking clubs, coffee shops, etc.

Have you tried meetup.com and used the search feature to see if there are groups of people with similar interests to you. You might also want to Google your interest plus your zip code and see if you can find anything that way. For instance, if you like anime, type anime in google plus your zip code and see what comes up.
