I lurk in the back of the elevator and try not to meet anyone's eyes. That generally means I leave last...and ohmygosh why is there a half-naked lady in a diaper in the ad section? [/off-topic confused revelation]

The general idea is last in, first out.

the one closest to the door.

I get annoyed at people who stand by the doors (partly blocking them) and gesture for others to go first, in some sort of misguided chivalry. Get out of the way!

The fastest person gets through the lift door first.

Being female - sometimes some "gentleman" who happens to be closer to the elevator door - says "after you" all gentlemanly like - and the damn lift goes without letting anyone through the door. If you're going to be "gentlemanly" - do force the door to stay open first.

Anyway - just in case the male in the lift might be "gentlemanly" (and stupid) - I usually shoulder charge the door the minute the lift door opens at my stop. I never have this problem with females - who usually notice people trying to get to the door and if they're in the way, they hold the door and move to let others through.

I do find it annoying that some people try to get on the lift without checking to see if anyone is trying to get off first. They get barged too.

Basically I will huddle in back wait for the door to finally open.... then bolt out of there like my tail feathers are on fire....mainly I use the stairs if I can.

Another vote for "closest to the door". Easier that way. Also, passengers should leave before new ones enter.

I avoid the elevator unless I'm by myself. If a guy comes on before I get to my floor, I tolerate it. If children or women get on, I get off and wait for the next one if possible.

I try to get in and get out of the way. It makes sense that closest to the door needs to get out first just to be orderly. I always yield to women and elderly, if they are able to get off before me. If I am in their way, I step off and try to "hold the door" for them.
