I will be frank with everyone right now: I have been living in an isolated town for the better part of 14 years. It's gotten to me, and I can't socialize well enough worth a damn to have a GF in my life.

What am I to do? I fear it will take me years to undo what my isolation has done to me. *sob*

What is so bad about isolation? I guess most people here would be happy about it, they suffer from far too many people around them. An isolated town in the so called "the middle of nowhere" is the dream of may Aspies. ;)

Ah, the girlfirend problem, right? You feel old enough for a girlfriend but there are no appropriate girls around. Well, you could move into a bigger town where there are societies and clubs for every possible hobby. Try to meet people only during club activities, so you can talk about interesting things instead of doing "small talk", until you know them good enough to try to make friends.

Can't move to another town? There's internet. Maybe some people in forums (like this one here) would like a pen friend. Maybe one day you'll visit your pen friend in real life. The internet makes finding interesting people much easier, you know ... the tricky step is to make them meet you offline one day ;)

The important lesson is: Avoid "small talk"! Contact people in situations that allow intelligent conversation. Don't visit bars or cafes, but interesting societies, especially quirky ones like a cloud appreciation society (really, they exist!). There you'll find people who find you and your talk interesting, that means, people you can chat with for hour.

If you haven't tried it, sign up for Plenty Of Fish and/or OKCupid. They're pretty popular.

I hate to see people alone.

Yeah, I'm alone, but I don't mind it (not like years ago when it nearly killed me).

Already done. I am on the verge of giving up and staying in seclusion.

Do you have the money to commute to social events nearby towns? Just how isolated is it?

Fairly isolated. I live about an hour and 15 minutes north of Seattle.

I think the OP sees a problem in it for himself. He's feeling lonely and wants a gf.

Ah, well that does suck. If I remember right you do go to conventions, though, and making the most of social opportunities there isn't something to overlook. I've also improved some social skills through Skype calls and video chat with online friends.
