There aren't any organized AS groups for adults in my area, so I'm toying with the idea of starting one.

What kinds of things would you like in a group if you went to one? How much structure would you like?

I compliment you for your energy and enthusiasm for trying something like this.

Speaking personally, I'd like a group who met monthly and engaged in fun actinides such as bowling night, board game night, movie night. Sometimes if it involves a little bit of walking or traveling together, that can serve as a good group builder. And maybe if something really hits and becomes popular, you could ask someone if they wanted to be the leader of that particular activity, say once a month bowling, with a full-time, regular leader later to be elected.

I would also like a group that engaged in occasional political activism, say scheduling a meeting with a corporate HR department to politely challenge them on hiring practices, or meeting with a state rep to start bringing him or her up to speed on autism issues.

And you may want to look into ASAN as one resource among many. This is an additional path, not a requirement. It's also possible to do it entirely on your own. Roll with what seems promising.

Those are some interesting ideas. I hadn't thought about looking into ASAN.

Now this would be my idea of a good group. I went to one that finished up last month, it was a weekly group that dealt with preparing for the working world and social skills. But I don't feel I gained a lot from it. For one thing I never gained any new friends or contacts from it, and I don't feel my problems were properly addressed. The idea of a group like this would appeal to me. No breakdown of flaws or how you should interact, just getting together and having a good time in a laid back atmosphere, and maybe even make some new friends. The only other group I'm aware of in my area is another support group, which will probably be similar to the one I finished up. I might have to look more into this.
