EDIT: Though I intended for the hangouts to be focused on film/games, I'd like to broaden the scope to free up discussion.

I know this site is catered for people with AS or on the autistic spectrum; I've had social anxiety since I was a kid which makes it hard for me to socialize. I have lived a life of avoiding interactions with people and expressing my thoughts, and I want to change it. I want to build some social confidence as I progress my academics and professional career. If you feel the same way here is my proposal to you:

If we can get a group of people (~3-5) to start a weekly (or biweekly) google+ hangout session where we can talk about whatever topics might interest the group for an hour or so, it would seem like a great way for anyone to both practice social skills and just have a good time with people who have the similar interests as yourself.

Google+ Hangout:
-Webcam not mandatory (you can just turn yours off if you're uncomfortable showing yourself)
-Microphone required. I want a social experience more than the typical textual interchange of the internet.
-No pressure! This is going to be a friendly environment. No obligations. No negative vibes. Preferably, I'd like to get to know a few people well, rather than have different people every session.

There's a lot of flexibility in what we can talk about. Again, I thought this would be fun and helpful for people that are in a similar situation as me.

Please post below or PM if you're down for a session and/or have ideas for a session, so I can kickstart this hangout conversation.

Though I initially intended it to be for college students (or post-college/young adults), anyone is free to drop by!

I like this idea. I don't know any Aspies other than myself at my college.

Are there any audacious takers on this venture of mine? :o
Someone voted for a different subject for discussion; please post if you would like to talk about other things. Maybe books like a book club? (that's a pretty nice idea too where we all read a book and discuss)
Maybe we can just talk about college, relationships, etc. It's all up to you folks :)

I like a good combo of things. I tried getting an Asperger's support group going at my college's counseling center (more as a way of getting to know who else was out there), but there wasn't much demand for it. Here's a list of things I'd be willing to talk about in a venue like a hangout:

- Film
- Video games (though I haven't been as up to date with modern games; my haydays were the N64/PS2 generations)
- Academic interests
- Career prep advice
- Interpersonal relationships w/ other college kids
- Integrating or dealing with traditional college culture
- Books (though I don't read much modern stuff; mainly the classics; I also write some short stories myself)

This list isn't all-inclusive, either. Feel free to comment on, add to, or remove from it in order that mutual consensus can be attained.

I am not much of a talker but I like the features in Google + hangout and a platform geared towards people who have difficulties with social interaction.

Subjects I would be willing to talk about in a hangout

- movies
- home schooling
- anime
- DTP (Photoshop,Illustrator)
- Gaming
- Social interaction
- Cultural stuff

I have previously dumped social media like Facebook, but I'm curious about this. I am a nut for Cinema. Also, I'm currently a college student.

I'm not currently a member of Google + so I'm not sure what I would need to do to join or when you would have meetings. I've actually wondered about trying Google+ and if it has more options than Facebook.

This is great! I'll send you guys a PM and we can organize our first hangout. :D

Here are who we have so far:
pawnstorm, lostexporer, KinetiK, Philosoraptor, mfs1013, Zemashumashu, VIDEODROME(?)

Some common topics:
Films, games, academics, relationships/life, w/e!

Okay, so I tested out hangout. It seems to run pretty smoothly. No account required.

I'll send some PM's asking you for your preference on date/time and 3 topics just to finalize everything.

Hi I saw the PM and I think I missed the part about requesting people use a microphone. Maybe when I first read this I assumed it was like a Facebook group chat.

I actually don't have a microphone on this laptop at the moment.

Some counselor friends of mine are running a Google Hangout social skills group. It's a bit different from what you have in mind (since they want to more directly work on skills instead of having a general hangout), but it might be worth checking out as well. The details are Here.

I'm up for it, though I might not always join. It depends on the situation and time, and if I'm willing to drag out my working headset.

I'm open to talk about anything. It's more fun to talk about interesting things, as long as it's not too far above the head (Like when people get deep into programming stuff.). But I talk easiest about games, anime/manga, movies, life, and technology (Electronics and other gadgets.).

Some suggestions:
Maybe do a "topic of the day?" and then encourage (Not enforce.) it, though let people talk about what they want?
There's also the alternatives of things like Ventrilo and Teamspeak. Though you would need a server to use, and there's no camera support, I believe.

I will be busy with College during the suggested time in the PM.

Also, I don't have a microphone/headset.
