Has anyone noticed that these are typically full of creepy old men, 3/4 of whom haven't been officially diagnosed with anything? The reason why most of them have life problems is because they take the objectification of women to an extreme. Others may just be criminals and pedophiles. The last time I went, one seemed to be a pervert who enjoyed watching "My Little Pony" and was likely a pedophile also, and another complained about getting fired from a job for making sexist and lesbian jokes about his lesbian supervisor.

Where do young people with legitimate autism diagnoses typically go?

No, I haven't noticed that. In the one I was part of, most of the people were diagnosed. I suppose that's to be expected though because the official aspie groups in south africa are usually supported by Autism South Africa.

Hang on now, lot's of adults like "My Little Pony", it doesn't make them "perverts" or "peadophiles". There's whole fan culture who call themselves "bronies" and I think a few of them are even on this site.

I would consider you lucky. The only group we have here consists of young people with multiple developmental problems and the all of the meetings were about what to have for lunch at the next meeting pretty much. I quit going after about the third time.

Where I am, there are groups specifically suited to people of certain age groups ... do you know of any like this near you?

Regardless, it sounds like you seriously need to find a better arrangement!

The group I attend, the branch officer mentioned something about a younger female (about 7 years younger than me) coming to the group. She explained that she'd rather the female came to the group I attend and not the other one. The other one is full of older men who are generally after a girlfriend. This is despite the fact that we're not allowed relationships within the group or something.

Not had a problem myself with them.

Gosh, Wow, I am now 50 years old.

I am self-diagnosed and comfortably so. I have generally had bad or unhelpful experiences with so-called mental health professionals. And I think that's going to be the case for a lot of people my age. Asperger's-Autism Spectrum explains more about my life than anything else I have found. And I am glad I found out about the Spectrum and glad I found WrongPlanet and I think I am a contributor. Now, if it turns out in the final analysis that I'm more of a 'bridge person' (which I think unlikely at this point) with some Aspie traits but not others, well, that will be okay, too.

All this said, yes, I'm a believer in trusting one's gut instincts. If your gut instinct is that someone is a probable abuser, yes, by all means, pay attention to that. And the other guy who complains he was fired for making sexist jokes, well, even how he complains in the group can be a boundary issue. Plus, it doesn't seem like he's making an effort to understand how today's world works.

It's interesting you should point that out. I wouldn't be surprised if there are people out there - posers, if you will - just waiting to pounce on someone more weak-willed and defenseless. They probably think the aspie/autie population is weak-willed and are easy targets.

Not only that, he got SSDI almost immediately afterwards and endorses it for people with Asperger's. Just because I'm a socialist doesn't mean I'm pro-freeloader. Quite the contrary. This isn't just the member; this is the dominating "leader" who does most of the talking.

I second this.

Also, I haven't noticed this, because I haven't gone to any AS groups. Well, yet, anyway. My mom's planning on sending me to an AS girl's group at some point. I'm kind of looking forward to it.

Actually, come to think of it, there's a lot of awesome AS groups in our area... lots of different activities for people to partake in, from rock climbing to Dungeons and Dragons. You should come to Washington (specifically the Puget Sound area). ;B
