As of yet, I don't. It is not that I don't want it, but I just don't want to have to service debt to buy a vehicle, to buy insurance, and to buy gas, in addition to taking drivers training. All these things require money, and until I find a job I don't want to buy a vehicle until I can afford it. Anyone else frugal as I am?

I do, but only because my parents made me get it (they paid for it). I had a fear of driving (and still do to some extent) and absolutely hated my driving lessons, but I did get my license. I didn't use it for four years till I needed it to be able to commute to and from work.

i wasn't able to get one until i was 20. i had it paid for by state DVR, as they correctly estimated that i could never get a job [living out in the sticks] without one. i barely passed my test. i don't really like driving but unless one lives in a city there is no alternative to driving.

I got my driver's license at age 17 because I was eager to drive to high school, the mall, movies, etc. Yes, learning how to drive was challenging, but as you keep on practicing and memorizing the driving rules and laws, you'll be able to comfortably drive anywhere.

I'm currently learning on my second attempt age 30.

When I first tried to learn at 17, I wasn't really motivated, because I really wanted a mortgage more than a car. A had no social life then so didn't go out much, which may have been why having the independence of a flat was more important. However, as I've learned to succeed socially, and my socials circles have expanded, I am increasingly finding a car will be useful, which I is why I am more motivated to learn this time around. Besides, I personally find it easier learning at 30 compared to learning at 17.

I didn't get my license until I was 20, I didn't have the money to get it during school, plus they didn't offer the class at my school anymore like they used to. Then when I turned 18 I got my learner's permit and drove that way until I had the courage to do the driver's course and get a full license.

I love driving, had no problems taking the test when I had a DMV person that knew how to give directions.

I got one when I was 16 and I have been driving since. My parents paid for all the tests I took. Then as an adult I paid on my own when I had to get a new license when I renewed it and then when I moved. I also had to pay to take the written test again.

i have my liscense, and i am a safe and good driver (also according to others).
however, driving anywhere else then on the interstate takes a very large amount of energy, since there is either a lot to keep an eye on, or a lot to ignore, meaning i cannot drive for extended periods of time

I like that. It does feel like I'm coming in on a wing and a prayer on some travels... :)

I don't have a driver's license, I'll probably have to get one at some time. But I really don't want to. It seems so stressing to me, when I could just jump on a train. There I could relax ( assuming it's not too full. ) And if I bring my laptop, I can even do some programming while I'm at it. =D

For me, it is independence. My mom mentions how weird it is since most people by my age want a license. But for me, I don't want to rack up debt, have an expense that becomes a liability, thus forcing me to NEED to work, less I default on it. And then there is the need. For me, I don't have anyone I don't already hang out with that is using a vehicle, so for me it is an unnecessary expense. I just like keeping things minimal.

I am 31 and still have a learner's permit. I was mildly intrigued by the idea of learning to drive at the usual age, but once I actually got in the car? Holy Crap!! It was system overload. Trying to watch for other cars, pay attention to the signs, and having slow reaction time made driving a terrifying experience when I was younger. My coping skills are much better now, though. I actually just failed my first road test a few weeks ago because I was freaked out by a stranger in the car, not entirely familiar with the area the office was in, and inched just a hair over the stop line when the light was red. I am comfortable on well worn routes, but even then I never quite keep from holding my breath. I am finally tired, though, of having to depend on my husband to take me everywhere (work included!).
