One oddity of mine that has kept me in a social pickle is how I frequently talk to myself when I'm concentrating on something. It seems as though if I dont say a few words to myself as I'm doing something I'll actually forget what I'm doing and have to stop and think about it for a few seconds, which just feels stupid.

This becomes a real problem when in a classroom setting trying to concentrate on a math test, for example, because I find it easier to solve the problem if I speak parts of it out first... which drives others, and not to mention the teachers, crazy. Its like its my only way of communicating with the other half of my brain.

Anyone else have this problem?

I do this occasionally, but not in public.

I agree...what is that about? When I am trying to listen to someone who is verbally training me....I get lost. But when I am doing something myself and say it out-loud it helps me.One miner example is that I always get P and B mixed up when I am writing but if I say it a loud,I can figure out which one to write. If I do this is public,it is very low volume but it does help.

That happen to me al the time! I will forget that I'm in public and I'll look up and people will be looking at me. Than I feel ashamed of myself. I really do need to work on that.

I got the P-B thing, and saying it clears the problem. If I can speak to others, what is the problem with speaking to myself? Why did people have such a problem admitting that they spoke to cats, and plants? What next, laughing at the man who went shopping with a list?

Yup. Krex, I get the same switch-up. I think the ears and the mouth are on different circuits.

Yes... though I have learned to suppress it in public (eg, when I am at work) because it unnerves other people.

Oh, yeah, all the time. I try not to do it when others are around, as they usually take it to mean I am some kind of crazy psychopath. Talking outloud lets me think through things.

I talk to myself in my head when in public and out loud when I'm by myself.

I talk to myself all the time really...well, not ALL the time, but a lot. Enough that it gets noticed if I am out in public, but I don't care. Who else is there to talk to?
