Just wondering if there are any Aspergers groups in Newcastle upon Tyne in the UK?

I am very new to this having only just been diagnosed with Aspergers at a ripe old age of 38.....
It now explains a lot but I am feeling all sorts of emotions over it and am struggling a bit. Im not sure if I should just be saying "it's my aspergers that makes me the way I am" and just going with it, or should I be saying, "I have aspergers and I am going to deal with it and control it".

Can one control aspergers? Do I want to control Aspergers? Is Aspergers part of me or something to overcome?

It's all a bit confusing.

I am getting professional help through the NHS, but it is a long time in coming (up to two months till I get to see a psychlogist) so I am trying to do a bit of ground work before then.

I hope that I can get support from others near me.

I'm from Newcastle too, I'm 28 and awaiting official diagnosis so new-ish to asperger's and new-ish to this forum.

It explains so much but at the same time you got through your life thus-far okay without knowing about asperger's, now it's difficult integrating that information about yourself. I'd say it's not something to control or overcome per say, asperger's is a part of you, it can cause problems but equally has benefits, like with anything else it's a case of overcoming your difficulties and making the best of your positives.

Being on forums like this helps, and if you're on Facebook this group has been helpful to me to see others experiences of different aspects of asperger's. You may also find joining the local social group helpful, they meet at Newcastle college once a month to hang-out or go to pubs etc. - I've not been to one yet, but I'm hoping going will help me learn more about others on the spectrum and get support when needed. You'd need to contact the local National Autistic Society project officer who will send you a form to join, if you're interested, if you contact the person on this page they should point you in the right direction.

Hi guys. Fellow Newcastle Aspergian. I'm in the exactly same position as well, struggling to work it all out. Just posting to these forums helps but I'm now looking to investigate Aspergia in Newcastle as well. There seem to be a few Newcastle Aspies about. If you need any help pm me or just post, everyone is helpful here. One of the things you'll realise about WP is that everyone is roughly the same but with some interesting differences which makes a real change to the way things normally work.

I just wanted to mention that I am also in Newcastle and am trying to figure out if I'm really somebody with Asperger's.

I recognise almost every symptom and its quite quite confusing and hard to accept when I go from thinking of myself of somebody a bit quirky and different to a someone who shares all these strangeness with hundreds of thousands of people who have gone through similar problems to I. At an intellectual level, the idea of having had AS all my life makes perfect sense and answers a question I had given up on addressing and yet I find it quite troubling to think of myself as someone on the autistic spectrum. I fell like I should 'feel' more Asperger's; somehow be able to sense it; And that I might be wrong and just stealing the identity of a issue that I have no claim to. It is very difficult to put into words but I only realised a week or so ago so am probably just coming to terms with it I guess.

If you couldn't tell - I am finding this a little mind-blowing and confusing. Maybe I should try to meet some local aspies or even go and get an official diagnosis to help me take it in.

Not a Geordie, but lived in Newcastle for thirty years.

I'm tentatively getting involved with the on line Aspie community - mainly because I retire in a year, and I've always used work to fill the gap in my life that, for NT's, must be occupied by friends and family.

I live in Newcastle

I'm 33 years old and I have high functioning autism.
not exactly high functioning though more like robot man or that's how I often feel anyway.
