I've been told that talking about myself is a good idea when speaking with potential employers, but I'm not sure if discussing my hobbies is a good idea. I'm mostly into online media and children's cartoons, both of which have their own stigmas. So, when talking to people about my hobbies, should I be honest about what I like? Should I pretend not to have hobbies? Should I get new hobbies that most people would deem acceptable?

"Online media" is suddenly transformed into "targeted media," "entertainment media" or just "media." "Children's cartoons" can be described as "young-audience animation."

Play around with similar descriptive names and you will see what I mean.

Only if the hobbies are relevant to the job, you can discuss them in a way that reflects positively on you, and the potential employer asks or the subject is very relevant to what you are discussing.

I find it's usually best just to talk about hobbies in broad strokes -- like AspieUtah said, you can just tell people you like "new media and animation". Then if they ask for more detail, do something like name a few developers/personalities/animators you like, or if you have projects of your own, mention those. This makes you look knowledgeable about something more and more employers are tapping into (new media) or a form of art (animation), both of which are "socially acceptable".

Anyway, good luck with your interviews!
