My close friend runs a couple of meetup groups, and she wants to start a meetup for young adults with Aspergers and let me run it.

This sounds like a big response, and I'm looking for suggestions: mostly places we could meet that would work, and important things I'm probably overlooking.

Sounds like a great idea!

Setting up a meet up group is always a great way to expand your social network and make more friends.

One thing to be sure of is knowing there's enough people in or near your town or city to make it work. In this case its whether there's enough people with AS living locally. That will really depend where you live. I would personally recommend making the group also open to NT's who are keen to socialise and support people with AS, as I think this will help it flow better socially.

Best to get at least 6 or so people together first, and then just organise a first meet up in a local pub or cafe. See what people want from the group, and if anyone is keen to help run it. There should be plenty of facebook community pages and local pages you can use to promote the group and ask people to join.

The main thing is to start small, just collect the people who are interested, arrange a small meet-up, take it from there and let it grow.

All the best! :D

So close, but so far away. I must be about 4 hours away (not including traffic). Sad... well, I hope you succeed.

I'm really excited! I always had an inclination to help people. and this is something I've wanted to do for a long time.

This is a young adults group, but I'm hesitant to suggest an age range, I'm not entirely sure I should restrict older teenagers from the group (I just turned 18 myself, and it would seem hypocritical to restrict 17/16 year olds, especially since I was that age when I started looking for an Autism group to join, with little luck.)

Places to meet that would work?

Do your public libraries have conference rooms you can reserve for free, or routinely on certain days throughout the month?

I've seen similar meetup groups with the age group you described get together at restaurants and discuss over ice cream...

I'm looking for a place that would make everyone feel comfortable.

Obviously a public place. A library meeting room seems too formal, while a restaurant can become crowded with strangers, some people may feel uncomfortable talking there.
